John Carter, Lifetime Achievement Award

Photo of John Carter, Lifetime Achievement Award winnerJohn D. Carter is an internationally prominent organizational consultant, business advisor, executive coach, and innovative educator. Currently President of the Gestalt Center for Organization & Systems Development (OSD), John has served the fields of OD and applied behavioral science since 1969 as founder and CEO of John D. Carter & Associates, and as an esteemed faculty member of several educational institutions (e.g., Gestalt Institute of Cleveland [GIC], Saybrook Institute, Union Graduate School, Columbia University, and Case Western Reserve University [CWRU]). He has served as an Executive Board or Trustee member of many leading organizations involved with OD (e.g., GIC, Gestalt International Study Center, National Training Laboratories [NTL], Fielding Graduate University, and OD Network), and is an Emeritus Member of NTL Institute . John earned his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University’s renowned Organizational Behavior program; he is also a Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Phi Omega member. As an independent consultant, John has worked with the top leader at more than 30 domestic and international organizations, and he is a co-founder and developer of several ground-breaking training programs and the body of knowledge known as Gestalt OSD. At GIC, John began as a student in 1970 and went on to serve as faculty member, CEO, Director of Corporate Training, Program and Finance Director, Dean of Faculty, and OSD Center Head. He is a GIC Distinguished Honorary Fellow. John is also a Prefect in Shri Ram Chandra Mission, a natural path meditation practice. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio, with his wife Veronica Hopper Carter and daughter Annelise.

Glenn Varney, Lifetime Achievement Award

Photo of Glenn Varney, Lifetime Achievement Award WinnerGlenn Varney is a principal of The Change Management Center, Professor Emeritus of Management, and past Graduate Director of the Master of Organization Development Program and The Institute of Organizational Effectiveness (IOE) at Bowling Green State University. He is nationally recognized in the field of organization development and change as an author, educator, and consultant, and he has consulted internationally with major U.S. and foreign companies. A frequent speaker at professional organizations and societies, and the recipient of numerous awards during his career, he has also published over seventy articles in professional journals, ten books, and numerous manuals and booklets, and currently he is working on a new book, entitled Lessons in Change. His most recently-published book, Cases in Organization Development (1999), was co-authored with Robert Golembiewski. He is also the author of two well-known guidebooks, Self-Directed Work Teams and the SDWT Implementation Guide. Dr. Varney’s areas of specific expertise include symptom analysis, organizational diagnosis, change leadership, strategic change analysis and planning, intervention design and implementation, and monitoring and evaluating change.

 

Glenda Eoyang, Sharing the Wealth Award

Photo of Glenda Eoyang, Sharing the Wealth Award winnerAs a pioneer in the field of human systems dynamics, Glenda Eoyang applies principles of self-organizing systems to help people thrive in unpredictable environments. Since 1988, she has provided training, consulting, coaching, research, evaluation, and facilitation for complex change in public and private sectors. She is founding Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute and its network of 130 Associates; Director and faculty member of the Center for Human Systems Dynamics at The University of St. Thomas in Minnesota; an associate of the Center for Evaluation, Planning, and Assessment at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada; Scientific Advisor to the Plexus Institute; and member of the Circle of Scholars of The Union Institute and University. Her published works include numerous scholarly and practical books and articles including Coping with Chaos: Seven Simple Tools (Lagumo, 1996), and Facilitating Organization Change: Lessons from Complexity Science with Ed Olson (Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer, 2003).

Tony Petrella, Sharing the Wealth Award

Photo of Tony Petrella, Sharing the Wealth Award winnerTony Petrella has consulted to key executives in major corporations in the United States and internationally for over 40 years. His work has always focused on developing greater commitment and accountability through restructuring work and improving relationships in organizations, as well as creating a more trusting and risk-taking approach on the part of management. The primary focus of his current work is consulting with key executives on strategic repositioning and on the management of organizational change. He has also taught in the executive programs at Columbia University, and he continues to teach in the MSOD program at Pepperdine University. He has also been a guest lecturer at The Brookings Institution, George Washington University, and Queens University in Canada. In 1968, Tony co-founded Block Petrella Weisbord, Inc., and served as its managing partner until 1995. From 1975 to 1985, he also served as the Executive Director of the Organization Development Network. Tony has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations, both from the University of Minnesota.

Bev Scott, Service to the Network Award

Photo of BevScott, Service to the Network Award winnerBev Scott has been a consultant to organizations, managers, and individuals for over 35 years. Her experience includes a full range of organization and management development consulting in the for-profit and the non-profit sectors, and for fifteen years, she served as the Director of Organization and Management Development for McKesson Corporation. Bev has written on the subjects of employee involvement, change, and communication, including a book on Quality Circles, and she served as editor of Vision/Action, the professional journal for the Bay Area Organization Development Network, for five years. She is currently preparing a second edition of Consulting on the Inside, her book on internal consulting, originally published in 2000 by the American Society for Training and Development. Bev has been active in both the local and national OD Network, and she served on the Board of Trustees for the OD Network, including two years as Chair. She has been a speaker and facilitator for many other professional associations, and she currently serves as co-chair of the Board of Directors for the Horizon Foundation, which serves the LGBT community in the nine counties in the San Francisco area.

Roger Harrison, Larry Porter Award

Photo of Roger Harrison, Larry Porter Award winnerRoger Harrison began his consulting career in 1956 at Procter & Gamble, where he was active in early applications of survey feedback methods, and he later taught at Yale University. He then followed his heart, and has been an independent consultant since 1967. He has been active in most of the developments and applications of OD, from its beginnings in T-groups and team development, to culture change in large systems and organizational learning. In addition to his many articles for fellow OD professionals, Roger is the author of ground-breaking work about the design of self-directed learning experiences, innovative cross-cultural training, and training in personal power and influence (The Positive Power & Influence Program, co-authored with David Berlew). Much of this body of work has been published in The Collected Papers of Roger Harrison, and in Roger’s autobiography, Consultant's Journey: A Dance of Work and Spirit (Jossey-Bass, 1995, since republished by Authenticity Press). Roger continues to teach and consult, and also to coach OD consultants from his home in Freeland, Washington (Whidbey Island). His most recent articles concern bringing one’s spiritual practice into one’s work, and accessing the power of love in organizations.

Judith Katz, Larry Porter Award

Photo of Judith Katz, Larry Porter Award winnerJudith Katz brings more than 30 years of experience to her work in strategic culture change. She began her career in academia, serving on the faculties of the University of Oklahoma and San Diego State University. In 1985, she became a partner in The Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group, Inc., and she currently serves as Executive Vice President and Client Brand Lead. She was recently recognized for her commitment to inclusion and social justice by Profiles in Diversity Journal, which named her one of 40 Pioneers of Diversity. A dynamic speaker and internationally known author, Judith recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of her landmark book, White Awareness: Handbook for Anti-Racism Training (University of Oklahoma Press, 1978, 2003) with the publication of a revised edition. She is also co-editor of The Promise of Diversity (McGraw-Hill, 1994) and co-author, with Frederick A. Miller, of The Inclusion Breakthrough: Unleashing the Real Power of Diversity (Berrett-Koehler, 2002) and Be BIG: Step Up, Step Out, Be Bold (Berrett-Koehler, 2008). A member of NTL Institute and a member of the Editorial Board of the OD Practitioner, Judith is the recipient of the 2003 DTUI Cultural Competency Professional Award and the 2004 American College Personnel Association Voice of Inclusion Medallion.

Suzanne Zaldivar, Best OD Practitioner Article in 2008

Photo of Suzanne Zaldivar, winner of Best OD Practitioner Article in 2008Suzanne Zaldivar is co-founder and President of Inspired-Inc., an international OD and executive coaching firm. In addition, she is an author, consultant, teacher, and speaker based in the Washington, D.C. metro-area. She has served as adjunct faculty with the AU/NTL’s Master’s Program in OD since 1997; has guest lectured at New York University; and has coached Maryland leaders, both elected and appointed, in the Rawlings Fellows Program within the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland. Suzanne also brings a rich background working in international settings. She is certified in Multi-Track Diplomacy (international conflict facilitation), and she has facilitated community and organizational dialogue from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (West Africa), to McLean, VA, to Kabul, and other cities, in Afghanistan. Suzanne has also coached over 100 clients and consulted with over 30 separate organizational systems, ranging from Fortune 50 global organizations to small companies, as well as large and small non-profit organizations. Over the last 25 years, she has become a trusted resource for people seeking to understand and better manage individual, organizational, and cultural complexities.
