Dr. Mee-Yan Cheung-Judge

The 7th Annual Asia OD Network Summit was held in Singapore October 10-12, 2012.   Over 200 participated from 17 countries.   The theme for the summit was "OD@Work in Asia:  Engaging and Building Capacity for Greater Impact.”  The theme of engaging and building capacity was addressing during the summit as well as in post-summit discussions once participants returned to their home organizations.  

Dr. Mee-Yan Cheung-Judge, a longtime ODN member and Board of Trustee in 2012, served as keynote speaker for this summit.  Her keynote entitled "The Future of OD” was delivered in two parts:  the intrapersonal dimension and then OD as a field of knowledge.  Dr. Cheung-Judge posed three questions to the delegates for reflection and sharing:  1) What is your journey of OD, 2) What is behind your calling, and 3) What is the future you want to create for OD?

Cheung-Judge keenly believes the future of OD is in the hands of OD practitioners - and hence encouraged the practitioners to "go back" before "going forward" by reviewing their own paths in entering the field.    She suggested practitioners reflect on what is behind our calling, i.e., the value we want to express by being practitioners, and what future vision we hold about what we as individuals and as an OD community can achieve for the world of work.  She shared her own answers to those questions to evoke the delegates' own stories.  Some of the messages she shared was core to the work of the practitioners - - reminding them it is their job to help leaders build conditions for success (quoting Marv Weisbord that when Dignity, Meaning, and Community exist in the work place, economic success is an automatic outcome), to help leaders see organizations as living systems, and to be seen as a "go to person" for leaders.  As for the future of OD, she reminded the delegates to ensure the viability of OD by being both internally and externally focused, to be experts of process and a "desired commodity", and to continue to sharpen themselves as an instrument.

In addition to her membership in ODN for over 20 years, Mee-Yan Cheung- is a member of NTL and is the Dean of the NTL OD certification program in the UK.  She is a visiting fellow of Roffey Park Business School in the UK, is a senior fellow in the Singapore Civil Service College, and has a global practice focusing on complex transformation change.  She was recently named one of the Top 10 Thought Leaders in UK by HR Magazine.  She is passionate about educating the next generation of OD and HR professionals of the field of OD.  She has written a number of articles and books, the latest being "Organization Development:   A Practitioner’s Guide for HR and OD”, with Linda Holbeche.
