One of the most critical elements of building sustainable organizations is identifying and developing a next generation of leaders. Sessions in this strand provide you with the insights and approaches that will help you navigate the many challenges required to bring out the best in your cream-of-the-crop talent.

Session descriptions are condensed; for full descriptions, see the printed Conference brochure.

Nancy Arduengo, Ph.D., The ArdLen Group, LLC
Enhance your ability to work more effectively by using the concepts of emotional intelligence. The workshop exercises are based on the concepts espoused by the EQi™ Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Inventory.

Katherine Farquhar, AU/NTL
Joseph Conroy, Welkin Associates
Kim Toliver, HR, Learning & Development Consultant
Christa Lashley, Lead Service Excellence Consultant & Trainer,

Top-level executive transitions are significant, often traumatic, organizational landmarks. Yet these events unfold in predictable scenarios with peculiar contextual and psychological dynamics. Participants will learn two frameworks to understand these events and their transition points, diagnosing the issues in three sample transitions and examining strategies for working effectively in an OD role.

LF03: Validating Alignment around Leadership Principles: A Framework for Improving Organizational Effectiveness

Joseph Yu, Jaime Welch, M.D. Haque, John McManus,
Islam Azzam, Thomas Gajewski, and Edgar Mohorko,
Students of the Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Pepperdine University

Strategic misalignment can cost an organization its future. This session will give leaders the means to explore to what extent their leadership principles align with organizational leadership principles. By exploring the alignment, the leaders will be able to make desirable changes to ensure organizational effectiveness.

LF04: Artful Leadership: Connecting the Ancient and Modern through Story and Music

Michael J. Margolis, THIRSTY-FISH
Gary Muszynski, One World Music
The ancient traditions of making music and telling stories become modern tools for the artful leader to create a culture of innovation, connection, and high performance. Learn how to use music, story, and metaphor to create organizational alignment and community in the workplace. Leave this session with ideas, insights and techniques for nurturing collaboration and creativity in your organization!

LF07: Leading Sustainable Organizations

Handout #1

Pat Wheatly, Executive Director, First 5 Santa Barbara
Sarah Boxx and Kelly Marschall, Social Entrepreneurs, Inc.

Develop the knowledge to create improvements that last for the long term.

LF08: Developing & Retaining Diverse Talent: What Works?

Handout #1

Greg Till, Organizational Effectiveness and Learning, Space and
Airborne Systems, Raytheon

Most Fortune 500 companies are struggling with ways to attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce. This session will share the results of an in-house experiment designed to test the value of different types of development: training, individual assessments, and mentoring. Participants will leave with ideas for action to improve satisfaction and retention of women and people of color.

LF09: Predators and Competitors: The Ecology of Survival and Success at Work

Sarah Bridges, Ph.D, LP, psychologist and author
This session offers a fresh and strategic look at professional development, with a particular focus on the largely overlooked role of the environment (as opposed to innate talent) in shaping career paths, success, satisfaction, employee retention, and company growth. The session will delve into three key areas—the natural environment, the human environment, and the individual environment—to show how professionals can proactively manage their professional development.

LF10: Integral Change: A Descriptive and Prescriptive Model for Leadership & Organizational Development

Handout #1

James Puett, OD Consultant and Corporate Coach, T-Mobile USA
Integral Theory is an integrated, holistic model for describing both current and ideal or desired states of individuals, organizations and communities. It helps us understand the intersection of diverse schools of study such as psychology, sociology, spirituality, systems thinking, and many more. This session will explore some of the questions and possible directions concerning the potential of Integral Theory in leadership and organizational development.

LF11: What Makes Change Sustainable? Why OD Initiatives Fizzle

Handout #1

Shirzad Chamine, The Coaches Training Institute
Millions of dollars are wasted each year in introducing change that has no chance of long-term survival. This provocative session will explore the top 10 factors contributing to sustainability of OD interventions. Participants will be given a short assessment tool to determine the Sustainability Index of an OD initiative.

LF12: Roundtable Leadership: Bridging East and West with Facilitative Leadership

Jason Jixuan, HUB President, and Wenjun Du, Partner, Wintop Consulting Group of Wintop Management Consulting, Ltd,
Shanghai

It’s time to create the conversation that will allow East and West to learn from each other and leverage cultural differences to create organizations that thrive in a global business environment. This session introduces Roundtable Leadership, a powerful future-oriented change approach based on facilitation practice, and discuss how and where these and other OD processes do and don’t work in non-western environments.

LF13: Leading in Turbulent Times

Handout #1

Anne Knapp, Chief Information/Human Resource Officer, and Ruth Gutierrez Hafoka, Director of Learning and Development, GMAC-RFC
Emerging research on complexity science begins to reveal the type of leadership required to lead in turbulent times of chaos. This activity positions you as the CEO of a company that is not in crisis but senses trouble on the horizon. Step into the challenge of answering such critical questions as: How do you revive and continue to build this great company? What exactly is the leader’s role?

LF14: Embodied Leadership Practices for Organizational Change

Mark Mooney, Strozzi Institute
Somatic practices of Embodied Leadership produce fundamental, sustainable change in organizations and individuals. The Somatic and business practices in this session are used to reorganize institutions and individuals for success, rather than layering on existing limiting habits and processes. Participants will be exposed to a powerful business process based on relationships and commitments.

LF15: Leaning Into the Li: A Metaphysical Blueprint for OD Practitioners

Yvonne Cheek and Linda Stevenson, Millennium Consulting Group
"Li" is a profound respect and understanding of the natural tendencies of the human spirit. Great leaders and courageous OD practitioners know how to inspire, nourish, and tap into it.
