Reflections on a Successful Annual Conference
I am writing to you from San Jose this week in the midst of a wonderful gathering with so many of you at the OD Network Annual Conference. It has been an inspiring week, and I hope you have enjoyed sharing ideas and connecting with so many leaders in the field of Organization Development.
The conference kicked off Saturday with the Pre-Conference deep-dives. The affinity and caucus groups gathered on Sunday morning, followed by the new attendee orientation and Dick Beckard Mentoring Program. It was great to see so many familiar faces at all of these events as well as the new faces. Over the past three days, you could feel the sense of community building for the whole week.
The conference officially opened with a Keynote Presentation by Robert Kegan, and the first day ended with a lively networking reception and poster sessions with some great topics. Monday morning opened with a thoughtful Sunrise Commemoration Event for Edie and Charlie Seashore and a Keynote Presentation from Verna Myers. Other highlights included the Featured Speakers, Ed Schein and David Sibbet, and the Awards Ceremony and Fireside Chats with award recipients in the evening. We are wrapping up events today with a Keynote Presentation by Susan Foley.

In many organizations, the clever thinking of staff is critical to their organization’s competitive advantage. But three social forces have made it more difficult for professional staff to find the time they need to think: knowledge saturation, self-service knowledge management, and the democratization of knowledge. This webinar will address how to reduce the transaction costs of managing knowledge and deepen professionals’ thinking.
We will explore what OD professionals can do to design organizations in a way that reduces the transaction costs of managing knowledge, deepens professionals’ thinking and give their clients – and themselves - time to perform their highest priority-- to think.
Introducing Coaching and Mentoring Programs
In the coming weeks, we will be launching two programs for OD Network members: one to provide one-on-one coaching, and one to provide one-on-one mentoring. The programs will bring together experienced members of the Network with those who are just entering the field or looking for more guidance about OD.
Many thanks to Denny Gallagher and committee members Chris Brabon, Karen James, Hester Darcy and Page Anne Smith, who have developed this program for OD Network that we are proud to get underway soon.
OD Network Regional News
The OD Network Annual Conference serves as a forum for regional network members to connect in person, share experiences, and collaborate to solve common challenges. This personal interaction allows participants to create initial connections that can be continued during or after the conference.
In addition, the ODN Regionals Committee uses this forum to hear feedback on the committee’s work and planned activity. The following report was provided at this year’s Caucus.

- Create new value for regional network leaders
- Learn from each other
- Build the broadest possible ownership of the group
- Have everyone gain at least one good idea
- Held Regionals Caucus to support regionals networking
- Developed 2 knowledge sharing tools for regional leaders*:
- Program Repository to share programming ideas, materials, speakers
- Regional Leaders KnowledgeBase to share regional management practices
- Instituted complimentary membership for regional leaders and half-price membership for two additional regional officers/staff
- Created regional profiles to share more information about each regional*
