The Council for Adult and Experiential
Learning (CAEL) is a national, non-profit organization that creates and manages
effective learning strategies for working adults through partnerships with
employers, higher education, government and labor. CAEL provides a broad
range of consulting services to the corporate, government, higher education
and non-profit sectors. The organization currently engages in a broad and
diverse range of consulting services in relation to adult workforce development,
lifelong learning and employee learning and talent development. In the FY07
fiscal year, a small number of CAEL staff, supported by a small number of
external contractors, delivered 61 consulting projects under contract to
clients.
Through its 33-year history, CAEL has developed significant intellectual
property in these sectors. CAEL is seeking assistance to further develop
and deliver these assets by systematically converting them into usable consulting
tools and products. CAEL seeks to aggressively and profitably grow its consulting
business in its three target sectors by leveraging this intellectual property
portfolio.
We are seeking a Consulting
Practice Leader in our National Headquarters’ office,
located in the Chicago Loop.
Overview: The Consulting
Practice Leader will be responsible for documenting and formalizing the
products and services CAEL already has developed, and to help grow consulting
revenue and resources for all sectors in the organization. This position
will report to the leaders of the three sectors in which CAEL does consulting—corporate
services, higher education services, and government and healthcare services.
These three individuals are the President and CEO, the Vice President for
Higher Education Services, and the Vice President for Government and Healthcare
Services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

that will not only serve the consulting work but also CAEL’s grant-funded
projects and its on-line learning alliances with industries.

in the various sectors.
• Performs additional duties, projects and assignments as required.
Education and Experience:
• Master’s degree in Business, Organizational Development, Human
Resource Management, Training and Development, Public Policy Administration

life and work experience.
• Seven to nine years of relevant experience required, including a
demonstrated track record of success and professional advancement in a leading
consulting organization.
• Experience at identifying and developing consulting products and
services within a consulting organization, including documenting and “productizing” knowledge
capital.
• Experience as a project leader, running consulting project teams
for 6-8 years.
• Experience in the implementation of and use of time management project
billing systems.
• A hands-on consulting background augmented by experience in managing
a consulting practice.

sectors CAEL is engaged with—corporate, government or higher education.
Skills and Competencies:
• A strong appreciation for, and desire to contribute to, CAEL’s
adult learning and experiential mission.
• Ability to intimately understand and appreciate the value of a formalized
consulting services business, its organizational and staff prerequisites,
and the day-to-day management and administration of a professional management
consulting firm.
• Ability to address the significant organizational development challenges
in successfully implementing CAEL’s consulting delivery model and thoroughly
appreciate high-margin, issues-based management consulting—yet at the
same time understand the complexities of carrying out such a service in a
not-for-profit environment where products and services must be aligned with
the organization’s mission.
