Congratulations to Our 2017 Graduates

Summer is a time of year when the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” rings in commencement ceremonies at universities near and far. With graduate and doctoral studies complete, OD faculty at our premier academic partner institutions entrust care of newly minted 2017 graduates to the OD Network. This passing of the baton is indeed our honor –– and a responsibility the Network does not take lightly.

This spotlight article will address these topics:

  • Challenges in Sharing the Value of OD
  • Best Predictor of Success: Open Networks

For many, the summer ahead will be as bright as their future. For those who returned to school to enable career mobility, however, the transition ahead may be daunting and uncertain. Furthermore, when university “.edu” email is terminated, and cohort members drift out of touch, the experience of post-program seclusion can be difficult.

Challenges in Sharing the Value of OD

A key engagement offering of the Network is the Welcome Group Program, where new and student members meet each other to build relationships. The most common challenge expressed in these virtual meet-ups is sharing the value of OD. Students are hungry to understand how textbook theory translates to real-life practice.

In parallel: 2016 OD Network Chair Sherry Duda stated that according to 982 global OD practitioners, the most important skill for success in the field is expertise in sharing the value of OD. Connecting the dots here, recent graduates can indeed benefit from learning the experience of veteran practitioners in the Network.

Best Predictor of Success: Open Networks

According to multiple peer-reviewed studies discussed on, the best predictor of career success is being in an open network instead of a closed one. Of the OD Network, Associate Director Patricia Petty (Case Western Reserve University) shared, “There is no better professional association out there that is a more effective catalyst in connecting OD students to active professionals in the field of OD.” (Read Pat’s and other stories of fellow students, alumni, and faculty in special “GROW” feature in the May 2017 Network News.)

A core purpose statement of the OD Network is “We make meaningful connections.” As the largest collection of OD practitioners worldwide, the OD Network is positioned to help recent graduates build key relationships that pull them into the field and result in greater career opportunity.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the OD Network, CONGRATULATIONS on your graduation and welcome to an outstanding lifelong OD community.
