OD Network Board of Trustees

Matt Minahan, OD Network Board Chair

Call for Nominating Committee Members

Dear Colleagues,

In benchmarking other member associations and examining best practices in association management, the OD Network Board of Trustees has decided to make a change to the process for electing members to the Board.

Our current practice is to invite members to nominate themselves or others to run for the Board.  An informal group of trustees reviews the nominations and seeks out additional candidates for special skills or to help meet our diversity goals.  Often, that has resulted in the exact number of candidates as we have open board positions, sometimes more, which has resulted in a winners-and-losers dynamic.  In addition, participation in our elections has been too low to be representative of the full range of views and opinions of our members.

After considering what other similar organizations are doing, the Board has decided to strengthen our election process on a pilot basis this year.  If successful, we will revise our bylaws to reflect our learnings from this pilot.  The changes will create a formal Nominating Committee, whose role will be to recruit diverse candidates for the board, and also to screen potential candidates before placing them on the ballot.

Members will be invited to serve on the Nominating Committee; members will still be invited to submit nominations for themselves and others;  and members will still vote on the candidates put forward by the Nominating Committee.  But we do hope to present to members a ballot of strong, committed candidates who are fully informed about our work and ready to serve the needs of the Network.

We are grateful that last year's Chair of the Board, Marisa Sanchez, has agreed to lead the Nominating Committee this year.  Two or three current board members will also serve on the Nominating Committee.  And, we are seeking two or three candidates from among our membership to serve on the Nominating Committee as well.

The work will likely involve several committee meetings via conference calls, outreach to potential board candidates, and screening of those nominated.  Most of this would occur during May, June, and July.

We are seeking Nominating Committee members who:

  • Have a solid and well-rounded perspective on the field of OD and ideas about where it should be going
  • Understand what leaders must do to be successful
  • Represent the diversity of the Network in thought, background, race, gender, and sexual orientation
  • Understand trustee roles and responsibilities and the workings of a board of directors
  • Have good organizational skills and follow up
  • Can identify leadership characteristics
  • Are familiar with behavioral based interviewing techniques
  • Are a team player in support of board goals

If you're interested, please contact Marisa Sanchez.
