|OD Competency Model|
We have very exciting news! We are in the process of developing the OD Network’s Global OD Competency model. In keeping with our mission of serving and advancing the OD profession and in response to member feedback requesting a resource that defines the elements of OD work, the OD Network has begun to identify the differentiating competencies needed to succeed as an OD professional.
Based on a review and synthesis of relevant research and professional literature, the OD Network has developed a prototype model to describe the competencies needed by OD professionals. This review focused primarily on existing OD competency models and best practices, as well as on literature that describes the responsibilities of OD practitioners.
WHY A GLOBAL COMPETENCY MODEL?
To be successful, OD professionals must develop and use technical and behavioral competencies to accomplish their work. The OD Network Global Competency model will help define a clear set of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics around which to calibrate performance, plan, and manage professional development for OD practitioners.
The OD Network recognizes that successful OD professionals use both experience and expertise to achieve organizational strategy and goals. The OD Network Global Competency model will help define standards for the OD profession and clarify key stakeholder expectations for impactful results.
A Common Language
Competencies provide us with a global, common language to define the work of the profession and to better understand what is important to know and do for success. They help in answering the question, what is OD? They serve our global members to exchange best practices, interact with thought leaders, and access leading edge practices, tools, and technologies using a common language.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY:
We plan to conduct a content validation study to empirically investigate the accuracy and relevance of the content of the Global OD Competency Model prototype in describing the attributes needed by successful OD practitioners.
On July 15th, we will send you a survey with the opportunity to help validate the attributes needed for successful performance as an OD professional. Your participation is critical to the delivery of this highly valuable resource for the OD community.
Although the prototype competency model was developed through an extensive review of the literature and based on the input of subject matter experts (SMEs), this content validation study will provide additional quantitative data about the content of the model from a large sample of OD practitioners, including OD Network members, regional and international OD networks, graduate schools, the Academy of Management, and other key stakeholders.
The OD Network is following best practices, as delineated by Workitect, the leading consulting firm specializing in job competency modeling and competency based human resources and talent management applications. Next steps include consolidation of survey input, focus groups and interviews.
2. JOIN IN THE DIALOGUE:
At 11:00 a.m. EDT time, on, Thursday July 23rd, Matt Minahan and Sherry Duda will engage with OD professionals to discuss the why, what, where, how and when of the OD Global Competency model. Mark your calendar and join us in this lively discussion.
Also, please join us at the 2nd Annual OD World Summit on October 17-20th, 2015 in Portland, Oregon, as we reveal the results of our validation study.
