"Action Learning: Adding to the Bottom Line"

Many organizations have seen firsthand how action learning achieves breakthrough solutions, thus adding to the bottom line. For example, a division of a Fortune 500 company doubled in value in just 18 months because of action learning. Action learning teams think differently. They see what's possible instead of being hindered by obstacles.   This new way of thinking is achieved by the action learning process and the skills of the coach. The coach is the catalyst for learning within the team. The coach makes sure the team is aware of all important issues, and then leaves it to the team members to decide how they will work together. The coach is critical in helping the team achieve the deep mind shifts necessary to develop breakthrough solutions.

Track 1: OD Fundamentals

"A Proven Strategy and Methodology for Improving Employee Engagement and Organizational Performance"

The Poster Session provides information on a shared vision and proven strategy for implementing change in a way which both enhances employee engagement and organizational performance. This strategy is referred to as “The Five- Phase Approach” it was developed during a six-year long Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) research program.  Twenty major US utilities participated in the program. The three components of a shared vision are: 1.) What is to be achieved,  2.) Why achieving it is important, and 3.) How it will be achieved.

The Five-Phase Approach emphasizes  the importance of developing an overall strategy for improvement that includes: gaining organization-wide support for improvement, providing employees with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve the organization’s improvement goals, and implementing a strategic planning methodology that aligns the organization’s improvement goals with its Strategic Plan.  The approach emphasizes the importance of tailoring the improvement effort to meet the needs of a specific organization.

"Applying the Partnership Maturity Model to grow OD's business impact in complex organizational structures and partnerships"

In today's world, organizations continue to become more global, decentralized and complex in response to the ever increasing demands they must meet.  We as OD practitioners must integrate new methods/tools to meet these demands.  One of the capabilities or knowledge areas that can help is the ability to form and implement cross functional partnerships, quickly and effectively.  We must have the ability to enable these partnerships to thrive using models that provide new collaboration and negotiation tools   This presentation will actively engage the audience in learning and applying Jay Galbraith's Partnership Maturity Model.

"Bonding within an Organization: A Model and a Method"

How can an organization become stronger?  Whether a business, NPO, or community, this question must be answered in order to achieve sustainable success.  Nature has provided us with many examples of organizations, but to get to the heart of what it really means to bond, the examples at the smallest level are the best.  Nature has provided us organization at the atomic level.  Atoms bond with other atoms to form molecules.  Molecules with weak bonds are easily broken apart, ones with strong bonds stand the test of time.  Molecules employ different methods of bonding (covalent, ionic, etc.) and these methods give us insight into what bonds people with each other and organizations.  This presentation will describe the bonding methods and propose a method for leveraging this model into a sustainable change method.

"Bridging Organization Development and International Development"

In an effort to deliver more effective humanitarian and development assistance to low- and middle-income countries, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has created a framework and a practical, hands-on tool to integrate organizational learning practices and principles into development programs around the world. Using the tool, USAID offices and partners facilitate a process and conversation to assess their current state of organizational learning practice, and plan for improvements calibrated to their specific priorities and available resources. In this oral poster presentation, conference participants will learn more about this tool ”the Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting Maturity Matrix ”have an opportunity to explore the tool, and discuss its applicability within and beyond the international development context.

"Diving into the Deep Waters of Change:  Focusing on the How of Change Management"

OD practitioners understand the what, when, and who of change management, but continue to seek effective methodologies to deliver the how in collaboration with their customers. An OD consultant and her customer will demonstrate how Kotter's eight steps of change can be practically adapted to any change program. Utilizing a real-life case study, this session will enlighten attendees on how the eight steps can be confidently executed by OD practitioners in conjunction with their clients.

"Increasing the longevity of civil rights and social justice organizations through Systems Thinking"

Organizational longevity, the resilience of organizations to continue over time, is enabled by enduring external environmental changes and the respective impact of these changes on the internal environment, the understanding of the total system impact of changes and influences.  Assuming that social justice and civil rights organizations are formed primarily for the honorable cause of protection of legally established rights, are there characteristics of some of these organizations that help them endure change and experience much longer active status while others seem to die?  This presentation demonstrates precedent that links learning behavior and systems thinking to the longevity of civil rights organizations in the  new  civil rights era of the US, and explores design principles that impact the org's ability to embrace those concepts.

In the world of growing business globalization, leaders embrace, change or create an organizational system that ensures its adaptiveness and sustainability to fulfill the need of organizational development (OD). Many of efforts require transformational changes take place in leadership, organization design, and strategic framework.   Dr. Chen and Dr. Thompson's sharing topic will provide know-how, practical advices, and current research findings that are valuable addition to OD practitioners. Specifically, we share the best practices in leading transformational changes. We use a real live case study to illustrate how to improve the effectiveness of a diverse group after an international acquisition. Our report on recent leadership and national cultural findings bring an additional perspective to enhance OD strategy.

"Neural Network Inspires Large Group Method for Fast, Holistic Decision Making"

At GOJO, we recognized that - although we are market leaders - globalization, the digital revolution, and emerging sciences would force us to change the way we do business. We articulated 5 business strategies, redesigned our organization (without layoffs!) to capitalize on our interdependencies, and invited 120 employees from across functions to come together for 3 days to recommend business decisions. These  Connect Days  used a novel large group design to identify connection points across projects and functions, to improve and speed up information flows, and to distribute decision-making about a network of complex and often ambiguous initiatives. Beyond creating one-time engagements, the design generated and sustained boundary-spanning, catalytic conversations to speed up decision-making, internal processes, and innovation.

Track 1: OD Fundamentals

"The REAL THING! - a practical O. D. intervention exercise" 

Participants will be involved in an interactive exercise based on an actual O.D. Intervention Case Study with a large international company. A brief introduction will address theoretical principles related to : Drucker, "coming of the  new org.": Senge, transformation/metanoia; Deming, continuous improvement/Q.C.; Schein, "ask don't tell". Key O.D. intervention tools ,i.e. sensing interviews, active listening, effective questioning, flexibility/openness will be reviewed. Participants in small groups will brainstorm  Injects based on key questions raised during the O.D. intervention process. Small group reports will be charted and presented. Facilitators will also share actual actions taken during the "real-time" intervention.  In conclusion, a summary of steps implemented,  critical decision points, and results achieved will be shared.
