Optimizing Operations

As your OD Network Board of Trustees formulated the Strategic Plan for 2017-2020, one area we all agreed on was the need to ensure the business side of the OD Network is solid. This led to the development of the Operational Excellence Outcomes as presented in the strategy, and we are working hard to make progress toward achieving those outcomes. Two specific areas your Board of Trustees is currently and actively working are (1) making sure that our bylaws and the supporting procedures are up to date and support us in operating and governing the organization and (2) making decisions that are informed and grounded in data. Our attention in these areas is in no way an indicator that this was not important in the past, rather, just as we would advise our customers and clients to review how the business of their organization system functions, we are doing the same. To many, this type of focus may not seem exciting. However it is critically important to our success in maintaining and growing the viability of the OD Network.

Over the past few months, we have been updating the bylaws and ensuring we are complying with New Jersey state law (we are incorporated in New Jersey) and meeting current IRS requirements to operate as a non-profit organization. We are streamlining balanced governance so that we uphold the intent of the OD Network as stated in our incorporation documentation.  And we are working to ensure our policies and procedures align to the bylaws. This in turn ensures committee actions and activities are carried out with the best interests of our Network and our membership in mind.

Recognizing our OD Network is a business — we are in the business of providing value to members — we are striving to increase the use of data to drive our decision making. Data can provide insights that help us answer our key business questions about how we can better serve our members and effectively contribute to the field of OD. We have not perfected this yet, but we are committed to building this as an operational practice. We have also been working diligently with our staff to develop operational dashboards to provide the information that informs the decisions of staff, committees and the board. The initial work has focused on membership, practitioner development, the conference and our communication activities. 

The essence of the Network is primarily dependent on the vibrancy, energy and dedication of our membership and the impact of our work. Underlying that is the need to remain viable — our operational excellence outcomes are the north star for ensuring we do!
