“Learning across Generations: Stories and Lessons from Senior OD Women”

Learning across Generations is an opportunity to focus attention on the 'second generation' of women in OD. 32 women were interviewed 20 years ago for a qualitative research dissertation about the Changes, Challenges, Contributions and Lessons these women had experienced as successful external consultants. A follow up study was just conducted to highlight the legacy of these role models. This 90 minute interactive session is about the power of sharing stories for impacting practice and inspiring OD practitioners. Led by the researcher and several women from the study, the participants will hear important lessons for learning to be an OD consultant. Then the participants, both women and men from any generation, will share in small groups their own experiences with developing as an OD practitioner. They will leave more informed and engaged.

“Enhancing OD Capability Across Canada: The Canadian Organization Development Institute Experience”

“Connecting the Dots: Exploring Global OD Communities through the Lens of Communities of Practice”

In the global arena of OD, the role of information sharing and collaboration is vital. From organizational silos to rapid change in the environment, the demand for information-sharing and the creation of spaces to develop and share knowledge is greater than ever.  In this session, we explore CoP framework as a conceptual model that may be used for this end. Defined as a multi-member group that works together to solve shared problems and expand knowledge and expertise, a CoP becomes a framework for a dialogic, inquiry-based process (Weick, 1979; and Schein, 1999). As facilitators we will provide conceptual tools, share global examples (from Japan and the US) and offer basic guidelines and suggestions for first steps. Each participant will leave the workshop with a strong sense of how to identify and develop a CoP.




“OD, Inclusion, and Diversity: Yesterday, Today, and Looking Around the Corner”

The way we talk about differences in the workplace and in society has changed fundamentally in the last 25 years. We've seen shifts from a compliance focus of affirmative action to recognizing and articulating the business case for diversity in the workplace to focusing on not just representation, but the inclusion of people of all differences. Yet, stories related to diversity and differences are as alive as ever, from Ferguson (and beyond) to Gamergate to the battle for marriage equality. How do we as practitioners address differences and where does diversity fit in moving the field of OD forward?   This presentation will explore the evolution of diversity and inclusion, the challenges organizations face today, and how emerging trends such as Dialogic OD are shaping our approach to making an impact in how we change organizations.

OD Program designed from a "brain-based" framework of developing  "thought leadership/management competency" to initiate and engage OD learners in "transformative learning and change" from "an inside-out approach to development change and transformation.  The presentation is based on the meta analysis done on the epilogue of candidates in the doctoral program composed after completion of their dissertation work complemented with interviews and reflections of these alumni in situ. The purpose of the presentation is to share the patterns of "transformative learning and change" candidates have experience in their program of studies.  This would then be the basis for continuous improvement of the program to develop effectively OD professionals.

“Systemic Interventions: Inclusion of Gender, Nature, and Marginalized Voices for Social Change in our Global World”

Our world is intricately connected with every part of social and organizational systems influencing one another. As OD practitioners, we help groups to think systemically by becoming aware of the key components of their systems, looking at their intricate interdependencies and how they positively or negatively impact each other.  In this workshop we will explore and employ a participatory approach to identify change strategies that can be used to improve any group, organization or community. As new or experienced practitioners, you will be able to analyze and implement an inclusive systems approach using five lenses: identification of appropriate tools/strategies, gender, nature, marginalized voices to promote social change. Global development case studies will be shared and participants will contribute and analyze their own case studies




“Same Same But Different: Practising OD in South-East Asia”

This interactive session will explore the same-ness and differences in practising OD in a US/European context vs. in South-East Asia.  At this session, participants will explore the core principles/assumptions of our OD practice field, and how might these be applied similarly or differently between the 'West' and the 'East'. The facilitators will also present a case example of OD being practiced in a large complex system in Singapore, and using that case facilitate a discussion with the participants on how might OD be applied/practiced with greater impact.




“Using Organization Development to Build Peace In Ukraine: The PEACE Summit”

On the 4th and 5th of July in 2014, in the Ukrainian Capital of Kiev, a PEACE Summit was held with over 250 citizens of Ukraine while fierce fighting raged on in the eastern provinces.. The presenters used principles and practices of Organization Development were used for the planning and facilitation of the event designed for the purpose of  establishing the groundwork for a new constitution.  Individuals from all walks of life, various political parties and ethnic backgrounds gathered to make possible a new Ukraine. OD principles applied included Chaos Theory, Critical Theory, Transformational Learning, Action Learning, Whole Systems, Self as Instrument with leadership development, co-creation etc., were used. The summit resulted in several ongoing regional plans, individuals running for office, and a proclamation to the new President. We will explore the efforts of this summit in our session.




“Disconnection in Our Connected World: A Story of Polarities in Africa”

Drawing from our experience in Africa, we look at 'worthy causes' intended to drive development and transformation for the continent, and how efforts are often disjointed and therefore have little, limited or unintended impact. Our field can and must work through the disconnection, and change must be brought about by design, not default. Globally, this means navigating the polarities inherent in complex issues, such as care/control, unity/difference or collective/individual. We will look at case studies where these seeming contradictions results in misrepresenting the 'other', opportunity grabbing without regard to the whole, messiah complex and oversimplification. Together, we explore how OD in practice can activate collaboration, systemic thinking and dialogue that helps reconcile these potential tensions leading to deeper impact.

Currently OD theories and models are not as useful as they once were when organizations were changing at a slow pace. “Organization Development and Democracy”

So as, to the one that can be wise, we do not forgive him for not being so, we do not forgive the OD practitioners for being the guides of Democracy. And is this consistent because to the extent that organizations develop, societies improve or because the organization has contact with a part of society where it works. The practitioners of the OD pass through the streets, respecting rules, being examples, practicing honesty and leaving clean paths. The OD was a philosophical inspiration of Richard Beckhard, distinguished consultant who was introduced to me by Marc Silvermann, when they were both in Lima. Curiously the consultant Beckhard, said to us that the essential of the OD, was to know how to manage the exterior change, to turn it into internal change in Organizations.




“Principles and Practices of OD in Cuba”

In Cuba where social, economic and hierarchical differences between people in charge and other workers are systemically less pronounced than almost anywhere in the world, OD theories and practices (homegrown and adapted) both support and challenge the global field.   Cuban OD consultants will share the results of 25 years of government-funded OD action research covering a network of OD professionals in Cuban businesses and communities. Individual and group exercises will help participants explore how collective organization, collaboration and competition impact an organization's social and economic goals. Particular examples of impact (inside and outside of Cuba) will be shared from multiple OD learning communities, professional OD networks and from collaborations with non-Cuban OD professionals around the world.





“Values-Based Leadership in the ASEAN Context”

The Managers come from companies located in four countries of the ASEAN  Economic Community (AEC) which will be integrated in December 2015.  The AEC is a vast field for OD Practice as it is a growing region with its vast diversity and economic progress.   It will provide perspectives between what managers actually do and the value they place on these management practices. The result will give a view on the alignment between actual practice and valuing in the context of Asian rich diversity of cultures and practices.  A Brain based tool is utilized to map out the alignment and recommend  interventions that will enhance high team performance.

The members of an organisation have divergent interests, values and perception, making interactions between each other dynamic and complex. This diversity often reflects the challenges within the larger society, not only on issues of position and rank, but also economics, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, personal history and more. Sometimes the challenges of diversity are expressed; but more often are felt in non-verbal behaviour, attitudes and in the overall atmosphere.  Lost productivity, low morale and conflict often result.

In this session participants will be introduced - through a dynamic immersion experience – to a group facilitation method known as Worldwork.  Worldwork is a powerful tool for working with complex organisational dynamics, supporting diverse voices to be heard and creating awareness about the effect of our subtle biases and unconscious use of rank and power.

“Creating Meaningful Jobs in Latin America”

SABMiller is the second largest brewer and one of the largest beverage companies in the world with 15.000 employees in Latin America.   For several years in  SABMiller Latin America we pursued the ideal that all our employees could have a meaningful job.  We have a few iterations and the programme evolved over the years in focus and methodology reaching a standard approach in  2012, running for 3 years already.   We developed a conceptual framework which contains 8 critical criteria (and 5 descriptors each) and assessed them through group conversations. We had sufficient sample size of our people so that we could record the presence of the eight criteria across all levels, functions and areas of the business. We will explore all of the above in this session.




“Respectful Engagement: Revisiting Process Consulting”

This session will involve participants in a re-evaluation of the classic distinction between expert consulting, process consulting and pair-of-hands consulting. Participants will explore how each can be applied from an inflated, elevated way on one end of a spectrum, and in a subordinated, co-dependent way on the other. How can practitioners find the middle ground of true collaboration and what it means to return again and again to the notions of respect and reciprocity? How can we avoid the traps of cultural superiority and co-dependency? Participants will  share work experiences where they have encountered these traps and overcome them. The presenters will also share researched experiences with indigenous cultures and some of the practices we are learning about how to bring more reciprocal, respectful practices to our field.

Pro-bono volunteer work for non-profit organizations can be extremely fulfilling if it feeds your soul. It is a way of extending your impact into areas that are not well funded, but serve purposes you hold dear. It is a means to bring fruition to community and program dreams that are not reaching their full potential and cannot afford to pay for OD consultants. When there is no pay involved, and no sacred "bottom line," it becomes much easier to select involvements in which our successful efforts serve to enhance people's and communities' lives and efforts in a positive way.  This session will create guidelines for identifying and pursuing OD applications that can enhance resilience and well-being in any nonprofit setting, while providing a unique sense of self fulfillment to the practitioner.




“Keys to Shifting Mindsets of Diversity, Power and Privilege”

The Four Mindsets of Diversity:  Tyrant, Victim, Reactor, Co-Creator. There is a principle beyond the notions of being a victim and a persecutor; beyond being an oppressor and the one oppressed. This principle holds that we are all co-creators of the reality in which we are living, whether we are conscious of how and what we create or not.  Members of the group working on the issues have to look at their co-creation of the status quo, both up and down silos and chains. In this way, the process moves beyond the paradigm of victim and perpetrator. A key part of the transformation experience is becoming aware and conscious of the parts we play and have played in creating the current and past realities in which we live. In diversity and inclusion work, co-creation has both explanatory power and transformative power.

Nearly 50 of our members participate in this effort which has provided pro-bono OD consulting for 75 non-profit organizations over the last 10 years.

“Power Intelligence: The Next Core Competency”

Power is a critical feature in organizational life, but it's hard to get right. Our inability to use power well causes conflict, undermines collaboration, and lowers morale. Power is the culprit behind bullying, and decreases participation and engagement. Yet power itself isn't the problem. Power is a creative force, the human drive to make an impact. It engages and inspires us. This presentation introduces a new way to think about power: "Power Intelligence", a set of core competencies for using power effectively to create productive, engaged, and thriving organizations. Combining my professional experience with insights from social psychology and neuroscience, I will show what skills comprise power intelligence, how to develop a positive power climate in organizations, and the 5 key behaviors for healthy and legitimate leadership.




“Trust Repair Strategies”

Trust permeates relationships. When there is trust within groups, information flows smoother, issues are resolved easier, and people can flourish. However, when groups experience a violation of trust it disrupts relationships and work systems. Sometimes groups become stuck because the trust violations run deep and if left unresolved people may to hold each other hostage in that situation ultimately affecting productivity and straining relationships.  This workshop presents doctoral research on trust repair and bridges the findings with current client cases using intervention strategies to support and heal trust issues in the group based on this research. This interactive workshop provides one framework to support groups with trust issues. During the session, you will work with your own trust issue(s) with a takeaway tool and framework.




“Helping Your Organization Grieve: A Strategic Role for OD”

“The Ambivalent Emerging Leader: Millennial Leaders and Their Relationship to Power and Rank”

Millennials aren't the 'new kids on the block' anymore. In 2015 they became the largest generational group in the US workforce. By now many Millennials have assumed leadership positions in their organizations.  Integrating adult development theory, psychotherapy, organizational data, and qualitative research, we look at the leadership approach of emerging Millennial leaders as one marked by their ambivalence toward rank and power.  Raised in a parental paradigm that shunned parental authority and valued cooperative parenting techniques, Millennial leaders are less comfortable with both the experience and demonstration of power and rank.   We will raise questions important for organizations, as well as Millennials themselves to consider: How will they reconcile their ambivalence toward rank and power? How can organizations support them?




“Building a Mindful Organization”

Recent research shows why these programs work so well.   In this session, participants will: 1. Experience mindfulness techniques that can be used in organizational development programs. 2. Learn about the science behind mindfulness. 3. Develop strategies to implement mindfulness programs in their organizations. Three TED-style talks will focus on using mindfulness to improve individual performance, organizational effectiveness and team dynamics. The speakers have deep experience in both business and mindfulness as former bankers, analysts and therapists now all doing organizational development work.
