How to Find and Engage Your Organization's "Hidden Assets"

Inside every community and organization are "hidden assets." These assets are the voices of individuals and groups that reside outside of the organization's dominant culture(s). They are usually hidden because the dominant culture, rooted in the history of the organization and even in the history of our society, have contributed to or even encouraged their hiding. Finding and engaging these assets is first and foremost the work of those who make up the dominant culture. No less important is the work of those who fall outside of this culture — and their work and the revealing and valuing of their voice is supported when the dominant culture shifts to create a space for their voices to be heard and appreciated. The presenters will share the work, frameworks, and tools that helped them find and engage new voices inside of a community desperate for innovation and transformation.

Transforming Power Imbalances in Groups, Communities & the World using Theatre for Change

Uses popular education-based theatre techniques developed by Augusto Boal to explore conflict, oppression and imbalances of power. After a brief introduction, participants will engage in simple exercises and techniques that can be used to identify, explore and transform power differences, oppressive relations and situations in your group, community or society at large. At the end of the workshop there will be a brief review of the different types of popular educational theatre and how it has and can be used to create social & organizational change. Resources for continued practice will also be shared. This is a highly interactive workshop conducted in a safe group setting.

The Four Pillars of Creative Leadership: How to Innovate in a Complex World

Today's complex business environment calls for OD practitioners to practice Creative Leadership — the ability and willingness to view problems from new angles, explore unfamiliar paths and navigate ambiguity rather than resist it. Using AI to Create Coordinated Action around More Valuable Goals

The management science of Alignment Optimization identified there are two categories of alignment, four types of alignment, four states of alignment, three alignment measures that predict a group's success, and three reasons for misalignment. Objectively and directly measuring alignment beyond the traditional binary Yes/No, They Are/They Aren't, requires technology. In the presentation, we will explain the multiple dimensions of alignment which provide insights into groups not previously available to facilitators, and how JOE, an AI-based expert system, is aiding change leaders and consultants to pinpoint action with a new level of accuracy and precision.

Are You a Change Saboteur? How to Create Change in a Change-Averse Organization

In large-scale, organizational systems change, initiatives can go one of two ways: success or failure. As change practitioners, we can often feel that we are fighting an uphill battle against a system that is determined to sabotage change to fail, instead of contributing to success. This interactive session will provide an example of a large change implementation and why an effectively defined change framework is not always enough to control the chaos. We will review a healthcare client's change lifecycle in transitioning to an electronic health record (EHR) system intended to improve clinical operations and enhance patient care/satisfaction. We will explore challenges the change team faced and discuss ways in which you can overcome similar challenges in a change-averse organization. Working together in groups, we will "assess and rewrite history.

How have I survived and even thrived with ADD? I have learned to balance self-doubt with self-confidence and this has allowed me to be more authentic and empathetic. I have learned to tune in to my own body and to know when to work nonstop and when to let the sleep take over. I have learned to use my short attention span to be creative and have multiple projects and writing ideas in various stages of incubation. I have learned to leverage my ability to hyper-focus and get fully immersed in a project. I have learned to be compassionate to other's challenges, and to meet clients where they are. I have learned to love my ADD. Change does not scare me, I live passionately, I see possibilities where others see limitations. I embrace how my brain works, in all of its messiness and endless possibilities.

Seven Impossible Things: The Experience and Dynamics of Developing a Transcendent Team

Teams that exhibit extraordinary performance concurrently in all metrics of success are rare, yet do exist. While there is substantial research around similar types of teams such as those who are self-managed, there is a gap in examining these special ‘Transcendent Teams'. This research offers an experiential ethnographic study of the startup and development of a Transcendent Team from the perspective of its team members and support staff. This study itemizes the selection, development activities and differing levels of intervention that such a team used in its transformation. The experiences and impacts of key team members are explored throughout the developmental process, increasing the understanding of Transcendent Teams. By relating to the team's experience and dynamics, it may be practical to replicate and extend similar benefits to the community, government, business and other organizations looking for a transformational change.

Making Sense of Use of Self: The Key to Your Ultimate Effectiveness

Leader or change agent, new or experienced, your impact is inter-twined with who you are and how you manage your self in action. After all the personality variables, education, and training, outcomes depend a great deal on how you use your self. Every day we are faced with situations in which it is important to understand what is really going on, be present and conscious, have clear intentions and use choices in our action-taking. Structured Dialogues with GoWall: A New Type of Meetings Where Everyone is Engaged

We all have been in meetings which were dominated by a few, some of the quiet couldn't participate, a number of participants were multitasking and the remote attendees couldn't get a word in. All this can be remedied by using GoWall and Structured Dialogue. In this hands-on session, participants begin with a design activity to experience how to design for structured dialogues. They will then simulate a large meeting where some of the participants are in the room and others are virtually located. Participants will be organized by teams. They will be given an opportunity to experience and practice an innovative new approach to engaging with everyone (even the quiets) systematically curate all input and quickly derive a plan of action. This session requires participants to use their computer.

Collaborations That Work — And Last: Learnings From Success in an Unlikely Place

Collaboration has become a dirty word in the management literature. Enormous money gets spent on the trappings of collaboration (workspaces, team building trainings, etc.), but too often, this either doesn't produce tangible returns, or worse, makes people less productive than before. That said, collaboration is what it's all about, right? Frictions and disconnects between people, groups and organizations are some of the biggest barriers to improved productivity, creativity, flexibility and organizational resilience. While most organizations have yet to find the "secret sauce," a 25-year collaboration in the most unlikely of places has been quietly running along making partners of former enemies, saving money, spawning creative solutions and generating thousands of skilled collaborators who have moved onward and upward in their organizations. This partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defense to clean up hazardous wastes at military installations has a lot to teach us about how to do collaboration right.

Joining, Not Judging: Bridging Divides to Enhance Interactions and Create Inclusive Workplaces

Pan-Disciplinary OD: Design Thinking for Organizations

Global problems require global solutions. "Global" has connotations far beyond the geographical. Global solutions must be holistic in nature. They must be pan-disciplinary. In the field of organization development, they must bring together multi-disciplinary thinking from psychology, sociology, behavioral economics and natural sciences. This session focuses on the phenomena, challenges, roles, interrelationships and actions involved in th process of enacting organizations, adopting a postmodern ontology and epistemology that is aligned with management and organizational philosophers such as Bourdieu (1977), Archer (1995) and Bhaskar (1998). Design thinking usually focuses on creating new products, spaces, services or structural systems. However, design thinking for social impact aims to enhance the human dynamics and culture in the workplace and communities, building on intrinsic motivation and meaning (Krippendorff, 2004). What does it take for organizations to understand the needs of people in a collaborative process and to innovate with new ways of thinking, doing and relating across a series of interactions/events?

Navigating Power Structures and Commitment to Change: The Impact of Collective Change

Organization Development (OD) practitioners know that power structures in work teams can help or hinder organizational change efforts. We also know that an individual's commitment to implementing change is necessary for sustained change. Leveraging power structures and mindsets about commitment is complex. In this session, through a simple, low-risk and fun simulation, you will experience the complexities of power and commitment in a team change initiative. Two academic models form the foundation of the simulation. The first is a theory from sociology gaining popularity in North America. It looks at power structure, conflict and competition in social groups. The second is a multi-dimensional model of commitment to change that shows all commitment is not created equal. Through the shared experience of the simulation, we will consider innovations to improve the impact of change initiatives. The learning can extend to multiple types of change efforts in business and community.

EBP in OD: Enhancing Evidence-Based Practice In Organization Development by Getting Action Out Of Research

Participants will learn how to critically evaluate the trustworthiness of several sources of information. They will learn a specific six step process for sources of data. We will use critical appraisal of evidence to evaluate data supporting (or contradicting) a claim. For example, "using team debriefs to increase performance". We will introduce, explain, and include live hands-on experiential practice. Participants will become intimately familiar with sources of evidence: scientific literature, internal organizational data, shareholders input, and practitioner experience. These sources will be synthesized and participants will learn how to determine trustworthiness. We will introduce a systematic six step method (1 Asking, 2 Acquiring, 3 Appraising, 4 Aggregating, 5 Applying, 6 Assessing) to increase the probability of higher confidence in OD interventions. Participants will be introduced to and gain experience with the CAT and ASK Manager Apps. We will move from scientific theory to practical application of EBP in OD.

Self-Management 2.0: The Marriage of the Humans and the Robots

A year ago, I was working at Google. I loved the free food, the amazing people and innovative culture. Yet, I found my happiness and engagement revolved around one thing: my manager. When my manager was feeling good, things were great. When my manager was feeling crappy, they would switch into directing my work with little input, information or understanding of potential unintended consequences. And I would walk away feeling disempowered and disengaged. Just as my disengagement hit painful levels, I discovered August. August is an OD consultancy specializing in shaping the future of work. August is a self-managing team! The autonomy I experience on a daily basis is incredible. My sense of engagement and empowerment became unprecedented. We had a few simple, clearly defined structures, rules and processes that liberated us immensely. We were incredibly effective, unimaginably fast and inspiringly innovative. Yet as I progressed, I realized the very structures that liberated us also restricted the things that made us human. Structures like holacracy, sociocracy, agile and lean have supported incredible innovation. Yet it often seems like they were designed for robots, not humans. What if we could marry the innovation in structure, process and organization design with insights in culture and teaming to build organizations that truly thrive? As OD practitioners, we are uniquely suited to lead the charge in building incredibly innovative organizations that are endearingly human. Come to the session to learn how!

Enterprise social networks (ESNs) are tools used at organizations that allow employees to connect with one another, exchange information and collaborate on projects. They are becoming increasingly popular, and they have the ability to fundamentally change the way that companies work. ESNs such as Workplace by Facebook, Slack, Microsoft Teams and others, can positively impact communication, collaboration and engagement for an organization. In this session you will hear about enterprise social networks, specifically focusing on Facebook's newest Workplace product; you will learn about the benefits of implementing an enterprise social network; and you will learn about the adoption process, change management strategy and critical success factors needed to introduce an all-company global technology platform. Lastly, the presenter will discuss ESNs and implications for OD professionals. Examples will be shared through a case study of the implementation process at Ketchum, a global marketing communications company.

The Step Change for OD: Creating Possibility

The OD models developed in the 1970s and 1980s provided our profession with the solid and robust frameworks needed to deliver value to organizations. Most of these models remain sound in their approach and provide good roadmaps for OD strategy development. However, the OD function is at risk of underperforming and under-delivering by overlaying the models with initiatives that do not have the flexibility to meet the changing landscape of organizational environments. The heralded "New World of Work" (reference: Bersin by Deloitte research) is upon us. The call to action is not with an academic lens but with a tactical lens. What do we actually need to DO in order to deliver value and impact? Delivery beyond the standard OD repertoire — how do we make sure we're moving fast enough to meet organizational needs? These are the questions I am on a mission to answer.

Leadership as a Lever for Large-scale Culture Change while the Whole World is Watching

In the spring of 2014, the Department of Veterans Affairs scheduling issue unfolded on front pages around the globe. Within months, VA undertook an enterprise-wide transformation effort to shift from a rule-based to a principles-based culture. This refocusing is largely dependent on leadership — and not just senior leaders, but leaders at all levels. All VA employees must be able to adapt and change to make decisions based on core values, sound judgment and the courage and opportunity "to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong." While transformation at VA is ongoing, the department has made great strides in improving customer satisfaction and employee engagement. This joint session by VA and their external consulting partner details VA's approach for developing a common language and a common set of behavioral expectations and leadership philosophy for leaders at all levels and how that approach may be applied across a spectrum of organizations.

Meaning-Making in Work and Life: OD's Contribution to Growth and Change

The process of meaning-making is essential to our nature. As OD practitioners we aspire to greater consciousness of this innate tendency and to more control over it, both for ourselves and for our clients. Theorists have noted that, as we age and our awareness of self and others increases, our meaning-making ability sharpens. Learning to Treat Others the Way THEY Want to be Treated: Cultural Intelligence (CQ) begins with Cultural Self-Awareness

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the ability to live, learn and work with people from different races, ethnicities, gender identities, religions, generations, physical & mental abilities, etc., in multiple cultural and social setting at various layers of culture: national, regional, organizational and group. Self-awareness is the foundation of CQ. Self-awareness is knowing who you are and what you believe, your values, feelings, attitudes and behavior. Cultural self-awareness is the essential building block for understanding who you are by the sum of your identities — for example at the intersections of race and gender identity, religion, age and class, and how you are perceived by others. Cultural self-awareness gives you the ability to understand self in relationship to others and better respond to the needs of both self and others. Improve your cultural awareness and gain the ability to treat others the way they want to be treated and find common ground.

Cross-Sector Leadership: Creating Social Change Across Differences

The complexity of the world's current social problems requires leadership that is shared across individuals, organizations, and systems. Cross-sector leadership offers a new path toward positive outcomes for those seeking ways to expand their impact, increase the scale of their change, and increase the size of their network.
