Marisa Sanchez, Ph. D, OD Network's Regionals Committee Chair

Marisa Sanchez is a longtime OD Network member, having joined in the early 1990s when Fred Nader invited her to serve on a panel at an OD NETWORK conference.   Marisa recently served on OD Network’s Board of Trustees 2012-2014.

“While I had been a long-time member of OD Network, I had never been involved with the operations or administration.  I benefitted so much from my board service.  Not only did it give me a chance to discover how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep the organization running, but it gave me the opportunity to think about our field of OD – where it’s been, where it’s going, and the important roles that OD Network can play in helping to shape the field.”

Marisa continues her contributions to OD NETWORK as the current chair of OD NETWORK’s Regionals Committee, partnering with the other Regional Coordinators to strengthen relationships and collaboration across the regional landscape with OD NETWORK.

Marisa served as Principal of a management and IT consulting firm for 15 years in the Washington, DC area before starting her own independent OD practice in 2003.  She enjoys working with a variety of clients including the federal government, private sector, and non-profit clients.  She has created a niche OD practice serving clients in the IT industry and clients undergoing large-scale technology change.  She holds a Bachelor degree in computer science and recently spoke at a conference for software architects on the topic of leading change through critical stakeholder engagement.

Marisa earned her doctorate from Fielding Graduate University and is launching an initiative to engage Fielding alumni in the DC area to increase the visibility and reputation of Fielding through its new DC office.

Marisa’s advice to up-and-coming OD practitioners is to be well-versed in current business practices.  “To build effective organizations, you can’t just be a great process consultant.  OD consultants also need to help their clients adopt good business management practices.   We can do a great job of team coaching or developing change leaders, but if an organization is still using business concepts that are decades-old – and a lot are! – the organization is just not going to be as successful as it could be in today’s environment.”

While Marisa works mostly in large-scale systems, she says that what she most enjoys about her work in OD is witnessing personal transformation.

“When I can help a leader see something in a new way that causes him (her) to change his (her) behavior – that’s meaningful work!”
