From the Chair

Gary Mangiofico headshotDear Colleagues:

As we start 2019, let me shout out Happy New Year to you and yours!  What I so enjoy about this time of year, is marking the occasion with a mix of reflection of where we've been (auld lang syne: times long past) and anticipation of what possibilities the new year holds in store!  In the yet-to-occur year of time ahead we can decide the set of assumptions by which we intend to approach every day. I’m reminded of Roz and Ben Zander’s (2000) call to action for each of us to find the right approach for one’s self and then extraordinary accomplishment can become everyday experience.   Our creativity unleashed becomes an astonishing energy to support leaning in to the world of possibilities that any tomorrow has to offer!

Your Board of Trustee colleagues and I are seeking to have a surprising and remarkable year!  I invite you to join us as we embark on an exceptional journey of supporting the world of OD for practitioners, scholars and those who are curious about what the field has to offer. We have a slate full of webinars to host, new journal publications to offer, connections to be made in person or virtually, and of course our special 2019 OD Network Conference in Las Vegas later this year!  These are just a few of the offerings coming your way. We've added a new Trustee role to bring in the voice of the young practitioner and one to foster the co-creation of an amazing conference. I encourage you to take an active role with us whether as a recipient of these offerings, and maybe even as a volunteer to give back and support the field that supports us!  We’ll also be reaching out with surveys and invitations to ask you to help us co-create what the OD Network and can be in 2019 and beyond!

It has been astonishing and heartwarming to see the response we have had to the OD Network’s year in 2018, and the encouragement to go further and reach higher than before. I’m humbled to be asked to lead this exceptional organization as President and Board Chair for a second term and grateful to all those who have stepped up alongside and made a difference!  Most of you have heard me say that we need OD’s voice in the world and that is just what we are endeavoring to support!  So, visit the website, consider being a volunteer, respond to our surveys and invitations, but mostly be a voice for the possibilities that OD carries in to the world!  I look forward to an amazing year together!

Appreciatively and warmly I wish you Happy New Year!

Gary Mangiofico, Ph.D.
President, and Chair, Board of Trustees

Third-Generation Leadership Profiles Based on The Psychology of Transformational Change

Presented by John Lewis and Doug Moran

We have all heard that “The Only Constant is Change”  yet when it comes to leading change, most of us have just memorized some things we are supposed to do. This session goes beyond the memorized steps and provides an understanding of the relationship between leadership and change. This new approach to leadership provides the leadership team with a shared mental model of the storytelling pattern of change, a comparison to many current step-by-step methods, and the profiles of leaders that are required to create a transformational leadership team. This approach produces collaborative change leaders who can recognize where others are currently stuck in the change cycle, lead others through change, and also recognize their own strengths and weaknesses related to leading change. Based on academic research and validated in many organizations, this storytelling pattern of change supports power.
