Irwin M. Rubin, Ph.D, 1939 - 2020

by Lori Blander, OD Network Trustee

The OD Network is sad to announce that on January 20, 2020 we lost a wonderful man and member of our community, Dr. Irv Rubin. Irv was a friend, mentor, teacher, leader, pioneer, and tremendous contributor to the OD Network and OD community.

Known to his students as “Doc Irv”, his teachings and consulting engagements were always based on the premise that authentic feedback is the fundamental factor underlying discovery and transformation. He believed that “without genuine feedback, individual and organizational excellence is destined to fail.” It was based on these principles that Irv founded Temenos Inc., now BehavioralOS®, in 1985. Irv’s work has influenced the lives of tens of thousands around the globe and his decades of experience in health care earned him the recognition of being the first non-physician to be made an Honorary Member of the American College of Physician Executives.

In 2016, Irv became an integral part of the OD Network Conference Committee and changed the way that speakers were selected for the conference by implementing a “blind review” process, giving all who submit proposals an equal opportunity for selection. He worked to ensure that the process was fair, and that all selections would capture attention and engage all who participated.

Irv was so much more than a “colleague” to so many people…he was a friend. To know Irv was to love Irv. His personality and smile were infectious, and you couldn’t be around him without feeling good. When “Doc Irv’s” students in his Webster University online course entitled Change Leader – Self Mastery, part of the University’s Master of Arts Degree in OD and Change heard of his passing, here are a few quotes about the immediate impact he had on them in just a short period of time:

“My heart is broken with the sad news of Dr. Irv’s passing. Although I did not share near the time I would like to have with him, I can honestly say his words carried great weight with me. You could see how much passion he had and how much joy he had in his heart just to be alive; truly inspiring.”

“I was also more affected by his passing than I thought I would’ve been.  My only interaction with him outside of this class was one phone call and yet he managed to make me feel like I mattered as I’m sure he did with everybody else.  I can only imagine the wake of grief his passing must’ve left with those who knew him so much better than I.”

“My heart was also broken to hear the news.  I wish we would have had more time to learn from someone that was so passionate about helping others and bringing out the best in people. While we did not know him long, I will say that what I learned from him and this class so far was amazing and he has already inspired me.”

In response to the ubiquitous saying, “it’s not personal, it’s just business,” Irv always responded, “there is no such condition, it’s all personal.” Irv knew that relationships matter and he lived his life spreading that message until the day he passed.

Rest in peace, dear friend. You are loved and will be missed.

Learning from the First Two Webinars in 2020

by Cheryl Throgmorton, OD Network Trustee

It can be hard to find time in our over scheduled calendars and busy personal and work lives to take time out for our own development. It is often even harder to take the time to reflect on the learning when we do schedule time for development. This article will highlight some of my personal takeaways from “Building Your Brand as a Leader” by Dorie Clark and “Coaching Skills for OD Practitioners” by Cynthia Loy Darst.

The New York Times says that “Dorie Clark is an expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives.” It was an honor to have her give her time to help us reflect on our brand as OD practitioners. Dorie went through the keys to creating a brand are content creation, creating social proof and building a strong network. I have been reflecting upon these points and plan to apply them as I embark on an upcoming blogging journey.

Cynthia Loy Darst, a pioneer in coaching who holds virtually any and all coaching credentials you can imagine, led a session that highlighted the Co-Active Coaching process. It was great to have her share her expertise with the ODN. It was an excellent refresher for those of us who have been doing coaching and a great coaching process overview for emerging practitioners. What stayed with me are the powerful questions that she reviewed with us: What do you want? What’s your vision? What’s important about that? What is at the heart of this? How might you approach it? What is your first step? Not only are these good for a coaching conversation, they are good for self-reflection in our lifelong journey to be the our best self as instrument.

Organization Design Primer: Everything You Need to Know About Organization Design

Mark LaScola

Organization design is a business solution that ensures a business is “fit for purpose.” It can be integrated with the art and science of Organization Development, but they are not the same. In our time together, we will review the essential yet practical elements of Organization Design and its fit with Organization Development. Many HR professionals lump these two together referring to them as OD&D particularly because at some point, Organization Design requires roles and jobs design and assigning people. This is a minor part of organization design work. While some graduate Organization Development programs touch on Organization Design, for the most part they are inadequate in preparing their students to do this important work.
