Stacy Blake-Beard
Professor of Management, Simmons College, Senior Faculty Affiliate, Center for Gender in Organizations

Session Description

Looking Back to Move Forward: OD as a Catalyst to Recognize, Transform and Energize​-

Dr. Blake-Beard will engage conference attendees in an interactive session which challenges participants to think about the various visible and invisible identities they hold and the ways in which those held identities impact their sense of place and agency in the workplace and in the field of OD.


Stacy Blake-Beard is a Professor of Management at the Simmons School of Management where she teaches organizational behavior. She is also Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Gender in Organizations at Simmons and Visiting Faculty at the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, India. Prior to joining Simmons, Dr. Blake-Beard was on faculty at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She has also worked in sales and marketing at Procter & Gamble and in the corporate human resources department at Xerox. Dr. Blake-Beard holds a BS in Psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park and an MA and a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Blake-Beard's research focuses on the challenges and opportunities offered by mentoring relationships, with a focus on how these relationships may be changing as a result of increasing workforce diversity with a particular interest in the issues women face as they develop mentoring relationships. Dr. Blake-Beard has published research on gender, diversity, and mentoring in several publications including the 
Journal of Career Development, the Academy of Management Executive, the Psychology of Women Quarterlythe Journal of Management Development, the Journal of Business Ethics, Human Resource Management Journal, and The Diversity Factor. She has received a 2010-2011 Fulbright Award to support her project, entitled "Systems of Sustenance and Support: Exploring the Impact of Mentoring on the Career Experiences of Indian Women," in partnership with the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change at the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, India.

Dr. Blake-Beard sits on the advisory board of a number of organizations, including MentorNet, Teen Voices, the Harvard Project on Tenure, and the Harvard Medical School Center for the Study of Diversity in Science. Dr. Blake-Beard has been the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, including awards from the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Robert Toigo Foundation.

Session Description

Changing Loosely Coupled SystemsThe purpose of this presentation is to explore the complexities of attempting to change a loosely coupled system. The process in many ways is the opposite of what we do to loosen a tightly coupled system, that is, how we "have grown up in OD". So, this is relatively new territory. Yet, the world is ever so gradually and clearly shifting from tight to loose. And what is a classic example of a loosely coupled system that has been around for 50 years? The ODN!


W. Warner Burke (Ph.D, University of Texas at Austin) is the Edward Lee Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education and founder for the graduate programs in social organizational psychology, Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. He is also co-director of the master of arts program in organizational psychology jointly conducted with the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

Dr. Burke earned his BA from Furman University and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to Teachers College, he served as chair of the Department of Management at Clark University, head of management programs and organization development at the NTL Institute, and executive director of the OD Network. Dr. Burke's consulting experience has been with a variety of organizations in business and industry, education, government, religion, and medical systems.

A diplomat in industrial/organizational psychology and in organizational and business consulting from the American Board of Professional Psychology, he is also a fellow of the Academy of Management, the Association of Psychological Science, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and he was editor of both Organizational Dynamics and the Academy of Management Executive. He has written more than 200 articles and book chapters in organizational psychology, organization change, and leadership and has written, collaborated on, or edited 19 books. He has received numerous awards, including, in 1989, the Public Service Medal from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; in 1990, the Distinguished Contribution to Human Resource Development Award; in 1993, the Organization Development Professional Practice Area Award for Excellence—the Lippitt Memorial Award—from the American Society for Training and Development; the distinguished scholar-practitioner award from the Academy of Management; the distinguished contribution to practice award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology; and lifetime achievement awards from the OD Network and Linkage, Inc. His most recent book is the 4th edition of Organization Change: Theory and Practice, 2014, Sage Publications.
