Organization Development, Sinkholes, and Planned Change: Analysis of Variation of Underlying Forces for Practical Knowledge and Relevant Research

Dorothy Agger-Gupta, Ph.D., Program Director and Professor, School of Human and Organizational Development

OD professionals and researchers are well aware of the magnitude of the costs of unexpected disruptions to successful planned change initiatives for cultural, social, organizational, technological and ecological improvements. Yet, after decades of research and experience to improve planned change in complex environments, these initiatives remain plagued by unforeseen events and unintended consequences. While underlying causes are often noted after the event, sustainable planned change initiatives in today’s complex environment can benefit from greater understanding of unseen forces that emerge to disrupt projects.  Analysis of variation, informed by phenomenography, builds upon existing OD approaches to planned change that address forces such as resistance, gender issues, and engagement of recipients. This session illustrates new understandings of geological sinkholes and presents fundamentals of analysis of variation.  We will discuss practical ways OD professionals and researchers can apply analysis of variation to discover and map unseen forces that create sinkholes and disrupt planned change initiatives in today’s complex landscape of interdependent cultural, technological, ecological, social, and organizational forces.
