Emerging Practitioners Program Pilot

Emerging Practitioners – Young woman talking in groupThroughout 2020, the OD Network is running a series of events and working groups that serve as the pilot to a future Emerging Practitioners Program, whose aim is to help newer practitioners enter the field of Organization Development. This “build-it-as-we-go” program aims to provide a learning and social support community for Emerging Practitioners, which the OD Network defines as anyone within their first seven (7) years of OD practice regardless of age or graduate education.

In 2019 we held two Emerging Practitioner Program kickoff meetings, one at the OD Network Conference in Las Vegas and another via conference call. Here, we asked emerging and experienced practitioners two key questions:

  1. What patterns do you see for Emerging Practitioners entering the field?

  2. What dreams do you have for these people and for a program that will support them?

When we analyzed and themed the responses, we found clear alignment across the needs for this group. These formed into three volunteer-led workstreams:

  • Building Community – The transition to OD is a difficult and long one, and Emerging Practitioners feel isolated and aren’t sure who to reach out to for support when entering the field. This workstream seeks to build a learning and support community for Emerging Practitioners to share their experience, make connections across time and place, and build working relationships for the future.

  • Foster Mentorship – Emerging Practitioners want to learn from elders and each other about both the mundane and complex parts of OD. Many, though not all, Emerging Practitioners join the field with some formal education (be it graduate school, certificate programs, or other trainings) and need the practical OD skills that come with learning from others through experience. This workstream will partner with the OD Network’s Mentorship Committee to define a mentorship and experiential learning process that supports Emerging Practitioners, possibly leveraging some of the practices from Social Impact Day.

  • Clarify Career Pathing – Many Emerging Practitioners asked, “What does it mean to be an OD practitioner? How do I enter a field that is difficult to define and where the job roles aren’t always clear?” Emerging Practitioners are looking for a clear understanding of the different career paths one can take in OD (e.g. org design, learning and development, executive development, etc.). This workstream seeks to outline what the world of OD looks like in 2020 and map the different routes one can take when entering the field.
