Stop Saying Change is Hard!

How we look at things — our thoughts, judgements and our known and unknown biases — affect how we approach any challenge. This can hinder our success in implementing and leading change.

Leading a change initiative with a sympathetic, “I know change is hard” sets any organizational progress at an immediate disadvantage. We can find quotes about the nature and need for change from before the common era; there is little new about the “new normal” of change management as a necessary work skill and strategic advantage to those who embrace it.

Let’s stop saying that change is hard, and rather recognize that effective change management is a core business competency. Companies or employees that excuse themselves by “not being good at change” are no more likely to succeed than those who would simply accept “not being good at” marketing, social media, budgeting, supply chain, and other critical competencies.

This presentation asks participants to reflect on their own biases about change, and how they may inadvertently be enabling employees and organizations to settle for less than their full potential by thinking they can opt out. We will discuss individual and organizational perspectives on change, and necessary first steps to recognizing that change is. It is here, it always has been, and it always will be, and now more than ever, it is a critical competency for the success of employees, managers, and organizations.
