Meet the Chair: A Message From Incoming Chair Genae Young

Dear OD Network Members,

My name is Genae Young, and it is an honor to serve as Chair of the OD Network. My tenure in this role began at the start of the year, and I am grateful for the opportunity to step into this responsibility alongside such a thoughtful and committed community.

I have had the privilege of serving as an OD Network Board Trustee for the past four years, and my connection to this community began earlier through the Philadelphia OD Network (PRODN), where I served on the Steering Committee from 2012 to 2014 and as Co-Chair from 2014 to 2016. During that time, PRODN was recognized as Regional Network of the Year at the 2014 OD Network conference in Philadelphia, where we also celebrated ODN’s 50th anniversary. Experiences like that, where a small group of people committed to bringing this work to their community, continue to remind me of the power of this Network and the people within it.

Professionally, my career spans more than 25 years, with the last 14 years dedicated to practicing Organization Development, built upon a foundation in Human Resources. I have served in OD and HR leadership roles across the retail, medical insurance, health care, and oil and gas utilities industries, working as both an internal and external practitioner.

Today, our field is more relevant than ever. Human systems, including organizations, institutions, and societies, are shifting rapidly. The need for practitioners who can help systems navigate change in ways that are both forward thinking and human centered has never been greater.

One of the strengths of OD Network is the breadth of perspectives represented here. Our members include internal and external practitioners, systems thinkers, organizational and institutional leaders, students, and professionals working across related disciplines such as IO psychology, change management, project management, human resources, coaching, strategy, and leadership. Each of us approaches the work through different methods, frameworks, and experiences, yet we share a commitment to improving the health and effectiveness of human systems.

As we move through the first quarter of the year, the Board and leadership team have focused on strengthening the foundation of the Network. We have been working to streamline infrastructure to improve operations, while also strategically reimagining how we attract, engage, and expand the impact of organization development around the world.

We recently hosted our first Volunteer Town Hall of the year, with plans to continue these gatherings each quarter as a way to connect, share updates, and strengthen collaboration across the Network.

In addition, we launched Joy Rising Fridays, a monthly gathering hosted by the Chair on the first Friday of each month at 1:00 PM. The intention is to create a space for members to share ideas and experiences from across the practice of OD. Whether you have written a book, started a podcast, facilitated a keynote, or participated in a meaningful OD initiative, we want to hear about it. These conversations are designed to encourage our community and help us learn from one another through the many ways this work shows up in practice.

Our next Joy Rising Friday will take place this Friday, March 6 at 1:00 PM, and I hope many of you will join us.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who remains a vibrant part of the OD Network. Whether you have just joined or have been a member for decades, your presence, experience, and contributions make this community what it is.

I look forward to continuing this work together throughout the year.

With appreciation,

Genae Young

Upcoming Webinar: March 20

Upcoming Webinar

March 20: Living, Leading and Facilitating in Grey Zone Change

Grey Zone Change is defined as A space between the current state and the emerging future that is undefined and unknowable. The grey zone of change can be defined as the space in-between systems – between the from and to of change. Systems may be worldviews, philosophies, organization transformations, methodologies or social systems. How do we live, lead and facilitate transformations in this context? This session provides an overview of the Grey Zone of Change, it's dynamics and what is needed to live, lead and facilitate through it. It is an overview of how Grey Zone Change helps us make sense the current times of complexity, ambidexterity and transformation in the face of new horizons and complex adaptive challenges.

We are in a world facing numerous systems transitions. From hierarchies to networks and sociocracies. From office-based to a global and mobile workforce. From a human resource era to a co-dependent AI/VR/robotics era. From shifting oppressions to equality-based systems. In the midst, organizational leaders must also shift their mindsets to move beyond traditional management practices to mastering ambidexterity—the ability to hold polarities and lead from both/and.

In this session, participants will engage in an inquiry around questions such as:

What is the experience of the grey zone?

What is required of organization leaders and facilitators experiencing the grey zone?

How do we navigate transformational change while in the grey zone through the subzones of transition, learning and synthesis and /systems development and do so with a focus on possibility and courage?

Now what?

Learning Objectives

Provide an overview of the dynamics of living/leading/facilitating in times of chaos and complexity

Use transformative learning methodologies to support leaders to understand how to navigate the grey zone

Provoke thoughts for transforming Insights into Action

The OD Network is saddened to share the news that Dr. Peter Sorenson passed away in early January, 2025. Please read the tribute to him below.

Dr. Peter Sorensen was a distinguished scholar, visionary leader, and passionate advocate for the field of Organization Development (OD). Over his illustrious career, he authored more than 300 scholarly works—including articles, papers, and books—leaving an indelible mark on the academic and professional landscape. His leadership was instrumental in establishing one of the world’s most distinguished Organization Development Ph.D. programs, whose graduates continue to shape the future of OD as scholars and practitioners.

As members of his final cohort, Cohort 14, we were profoundly privileged to spend two years under Peter’s guidance. Every time he entered the classroom, he inspired us to work diligently, think strategically, and aspire to be thought leaders and well-prepared scholar-practitioners. Peter consistently challenged us to create solutions that drive meaningful change in organizations while honoring the dignity and humanity of those affected.

His ability to connect theory to practice through his life stories and real-world examples brought OD to life. Whether sharing insights from his own experiences or conversations with luminaries such as Dr. Edgar Schein and Dr. David Coghlan, Peter made complex ideas accessible, relevant, and deeply human.

Peter’s passion for international OD was evident in both his teachings and his actions. He connected us with global OD practitioners and networks, encouraging us to contribute to the international community while broadening our perspectives. Equally inspiring was his advocacy for equity and representation in education. Peter aligned his words with actions, championing the inclusion of diverse voices and perspectives and emphasizing the importance of creating spaces where everyone could thrive.

Dr. Peter Sorensen’s legacy is one of inspiration, excellence, and profound humanity. We have lost a giant—not only in the field of Organization Development but also in the advocacy for inclusion, representation, and action. His contributions to OD and the lives of those he taught and mentored will resonate for generations to come.

Thank you, Peter, for your wisdom, generosity, and the extraordinary mark you have left on the world. We, Cohort 14, will forever cherish the privilege of learning from such a remarkable scholar, leader, and human being.

Upcoming Webinar

September 12: Neuro-Axiology and Valuegenic SELF-Leadership: Science Takes “Use of Self” to a Whole New Level

"Use of Self" is a cornerstone of effective OD practice. It’s about consciously and conscientiously bringing your whole self to every situation, action, and interaction. But let’s be honest, while this sounds great in principle, it’s challenging to achieve in practice. Subconscious biases and ingrained habits often undermine even our best intentions.

What if there were a better way to develop, practice, and master 'Use of Self'?

Enter neuro-axiology—the groundbreaking fusion of cognitive neuroscience and value science—and the transformative practice of Valuegenic Self-Leadership. Think of it as 'Use of Self 2.0,' a proven game-changer for enhancing both personal and professional effectiveness. Moreover, as one of the core components of “Valuegenic OD and Leadership” (VOD&L), it holds the promise of helping to usher in the Fourth Wave of OD.

Join this session to learn the fundamental principles and practices of neuro-axiology and Valuegenic Self-Leadership. Hear from fellow practitioners who have experienced its power in their own lives and work. Leave inspired and armed with a powerful new set of actionable tools and insights that can lead to immediate and significant improvements in your effectiveness and impact, in work and in life.

Learning Objectives

New insights into cognitive dynamics for a greater understanding of change resistance and motivation.

A set of actionable tools to apply to their life and work as OD practitioners

A renewed sense of purpose and possibility.

Message From the Board - Q2 2024

Message From the Board

Dear Esteemed OD Network Members,

As we transition into the third quarter of 2024, we are excited to provide you with an update on our recent activities and initiatives from the second quarter. Your continued support and engagement are vital to our collective success, and we are pleased to share our progress and plans.

Strategic Plan Implementation: We have made significant strides in implementing our strategic plan with a keen focus on governance across the board and all pillars and committees. Ensuring that we operate, brainstorm, and make decisions sustainably is at the core of our efforts. By reinforcing governance practices, we aim to enhance accountability and transparency. Each committee is actively engaged in aligning their activities with our strategic goals, fostering a unified approach to advancing our mission, and working together across our pillars.

Membership and Volunteer Engagement: Engaging our members and volunteers remains a top priority. Recently, we hosted two successful volunteer information sessions aimed at connecting prospective volunteers with committee leaders. These sessions provided valuable insights into the various opportunities available within the OD Network and highlighted the critical role that volunteers play in our success. Additionally, we have introduced a new form on our website to streamline the process of matching volunteers with the appropriate committees, ensuring that their skills and interests are optimally utilized.

Our membership structure is currently under review, and we are assessing ways to enhance its value, accessibility, and understanding. This review aims to identify opportunities to better serve our members' needs, strengthen our community, and ensure the financial success of our operations. Learn more about the value of membership and be on the lookout for an upcoming membership drive later this summer.

Strategic Relationships: We have been diligently working on enhancing our strategic relationships and refining our membership model to support these efforts. Discussions are underway with several potential strategic partners to explore new alliances that will benefit our members and the broader OD community. These partnerships are expected to bring innovative programs, resources, and networking opportunities to our members. We have also established a new committee, which is already underway, dedicated to collaborating with our regional OD Network groups to assess and determine what’s possible moving forward. This initiative aims to ensure that we continue to work collaboratively with our regional networks and will also help set the framework for similar possibilities with our International OD partners.

ODN International Summit 2024: We are thrilled to announce that registration for the ODN International Summit 2024, to be held October 16-19 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, is now open. This year’s Summit will feature a dynamic program designed to inspire and educate. We have revamped the sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities to provide greater value and engagement. These opportunities are now live, and we are actively seeking partners who share our vision for advancing organizational development. Significant efforts have been made to market the Summit, highlighting the various tracks and facilitators who will be leading the sessions. The full speaker lineup has been selected and notified, so stay tuned for more information on the exceptional sessions and speakers we have lined up. This year’s Summit promises to be an unparalleled opportunity for professional growth and networking. We’ve also launched an option to join us virtually for all the main stage sessions!

Advancing the Science of OD: We continue our work on the OD Review, with the latest issue released this past month. This publication remains a cornerstone of our efforts to advance organizational development through insightful articles and research. We are committed to providing our members with cutting-edge knowledge and practical insights that can be applied in their work. Additionally, we are beginning to look at the renewal process for our ODEA members and exploring opportunities to expand our academic and professional reach. Our goal is to ensure that the OD Network remains at the forefront of thought leadership in the field

Professional Development: Our professional development initiatives have seen great success this quarter. The Global OD Competency Framework, launched in Quarter 1, concluded this quarter with strong participation from over 125 registrants. We also hosted three different webinars: "Making Concise Conversations Count with Clean Language," "Speed the Path to High Performing Teams," and "The Human-Centered Organization: OD's Role in Bringing Radical Humanity to the Workplace." These sessions provided valuable insights and practical tools for our members. Additionally, we have collaborated with the Strategic Relationships pillar to secure a sponsored webinar taking place in July, free for everyone to register. This cross-pillar effort underscores our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible professional development opportunities.

How You Can Advance the Mission and Vision of OD Network: Our board, committee leaders, volunteers, and staff continue to focus on the power of showing and communicating the value of our network and all the amazing benefits within. We’re working on creating efficient practices and processes to amplify the benefits of OD Network, but we need your help too! Your engagement is a critical element of advancing the mission and vision OD. We invite you to take advantage of all opportunities by participating in the various Webinars, Workshops, or Peer Consult events. Additionally, engaging in the OD community feed (message board) on our website and creating connections with one another, just to name a couple examples. There are many tools at your disposal to help you connect with each other, keep your profiles updated, and utilize the member directory to seek support of other like-minded OD professionals working to help their people, teams, and organizations get better.

We also need your passion and expertise as a volunteer. We’ll be honest, some of our committees are struggling to push forward our amazing work and ideas because we simply need more people to help bring them to life. Volunteering for the OD Network is a great opportunity to shape the organization and get hands on experience within the field

In closing, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you, for your support and dedication to the advancement of organizational development. Together, we are empowered to create meaningful change and drive impactful outcomes. Thank you for being an integral part of the OD Network community.

Warm regards,
The OD Network Board of Trustees

Introducing ‘OD in Practice’ - Our Newest OD Review Section

Introducing ‘OD in Practice’ - Our Newest OD Review Section

For many years we have had a section called Practicing OD. When our last editors left, we put this section on pause to consider more ways to help improve its content in the future. The last published articles in the old section were completed during 2023.

We have now brought in a new editor team for this new section, and they have been working on ideas and processes they want to use. We are happy to relaunch this section with new submission guidelines and a way for people to connect with the editors and discuss their ideas and get early input to help prepare valuable submissions.

Our new editorial team:

Dr. Kyle Payne, kpayne@my365.bellevue.edu

Dr. Paul Taylor-Pitt, DrPaul.Taylor-Pitt@metamorphosish.com

Dr. Patrick Duffy, p.duffy@friisberg.com

OD in Practice Submission Guidelines

OD practitioners are invited to submit an article for publication in the OD in Practice section of the Organization Development Review. These articles are brief reflective pieces (900-1200 words) that illustrate real-life application of organizational development theories and approaches. To be considered, an article must describe a specific action and its results, and it must hold potential to elevate the practice of OD.

The article must include the following four sections:

An introduction providing a statement of the problem, opportunity, issue or challenge and relevant background information, such as the name, size, and sector of the organization and a description of their products or services.

A methods section describing the action(s) taken and referencing the organizational development theories and approaches applied and the rationale for selecting them.

A results section reporting the impact of the intervention on the intended outcomes or organizational performance.

An insights section including lessons learned and any implications for other OD practitioners.

To begin the submission process to OD in Practice, please email odinpractice@odnetwork.org with a brief description or summary of your ideas (200-300 words) and a short biography (100 words or less). An editor will review your idea and share initial feedback, and they may offer support to help you develop the article or refine it. We will agree on a deadline for your first draft submission of the article which must also include an abstract.

Once the article has been accepted by the first editor, it will go to a second editor for review. The lead editor may offer suggested revisions at this stage. When your revised article has been accepted, your work will appear in the OD in Practice section of the Organization Development Review in an upcoming issue.

OD in Practice articles use first-person voice. A brief references section is appropriate, typically to refer to supplementary readings on the organizational development theories or approaches applied. Articles considered for publication may not have been previously published elsewhere.

Please consider adding to our development of OD practices. Also, pass this announcement around your networks, and encourage people to share their expertise and learnings within our field by publishing in the OD Review section on OD in Practice. Writing provides new respect for you and can engage you with other interested practitioners.

Message From the Board - Q1 2024

Dear Esteemed OD Network Members,

We hope this letter finds you well and thriving in your endeavors within the field of organization development. As your Board of Trustees, we are honored to share with you some updates on our recent activities and initiatives from the first quarter of 2024. We plan to provide quarterly updates to keep you apprised of ways we are living out our mission of serving the OD Network members by holding space for transformative dialogue and sustainable impact of Organization Development.

Trustees & Roles: We are thrilled to have welcomed the addition of three exceptional individuals to our board this year. David Cooperrider has accepted the role of Chair of the ODEA Committee, bringing with him a wealth of experience and insight into organization development. Jody Saffert has stepped into the position of Chair of the Marketing Committee, where his strategic acumen will undoubtedly elevate our network's visibility and impact. Kimika Garrett has assumed the role of Chair of the Network Operations Committee, entrusted with ensuring the seamless functioning of our organizational infrastructure and operations in partnership with our staff and volunteers. Additionally, we warmly welcome back Robin Porter as Treasurer, following a one-year appointment by the board. A complete overview of all 13 board members and their roles can be viewed here.

Retreat & Meetings: In our ongoing commitment to effective governance and strategic planning, we have convened formally three times this year, twice virtually and once in person, with monthly meetings dedicated to addressing progress on the strategic plan and other important matters of the OD Network. A highlight of our recent activities was an in-person retreat held at the OD Network headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Facilitated by Peter Demarest and Ed Korbal of Axiogenics, the retreat spanned two days and provided a deeply enriching experience for all board members. Through engaging exercises utilizing the VQ Profile, we collectively explored our unique combination of VQ Assets, Biases, and Liabilities, enhancing our decision-making capabilities and refining our leadership skills.

At the core of our discussions during the retreat was "The Central Question of Life, Love, and Leadership: What choice can I make, and action can I take, in this moment, to create the greatest net value?" This profound inquiry served as a guiding light, fostering deeper insights into our roles as stewards of the OD Network community. The invaluable insights gleaned from the Axiogenics approach have significantly informed our strategic planning and forecasting efforts for the years 2025-2027. Armed with newfound clarity and vision, we are poised to navigate the network towards sustained growth and excellence.

Strategic Planning: As stewards of the OD Network, we are actively engaged in shaping its future trajectory through strategic planning endeavors. Our latest round of strategic planning aims to fortify the network's foundation, fostering increased financial and operating stability over the next 12 months, with a new 18-month plan to follow that emphasizes our innovation and strategic partnerships. We are pleased to reaffirm the five pillars of the OD Network that guide our endeavors:

Network Operations

Meaningful Connections

Professional Development

Advancing the Science of OD

Strategic Relationships

In the second quarter, we plan to publish the details of our strategic plan and look forward to progressing on that work. Central to this endeavor is our concerted effort to expand our volunteer network, ensuring each committee within these pillars is adequately supported as we propel the field of OD forward. If you are interested in volunteering for OD Network or learning more, please visit our website here.

2024 Summit & Programming: We are hard at work planning the format and programming for the upcoming OD Network Summit, which will take place October 16-19 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Early bird registration will open soon this spring, and we encourage you to mark your calendars for this exciting event. The theme for this year's OD Network Summit is how we lead the practice and science of organization development in the age of artificial intelligence. We will create a space where participants can explore the present and future of organization development through hands-on experiences related to Organization Design in the Age of Emergent Technology, Socially and Ethically Responsible Artificial Intelligence, and Communities in Transformation as well as a series of scholar and practitioner presentations. The Summit Planning Committee is accepting and reviewing speaking proposals from OD visionaries and innovators through April 10th to highlight their research, review case studies, and generate robust discussion and debate throughout the summit. And, as always, the summit provides an unparalleled opportunity for students, emerging practitioners, and field experts to network and learn from one another. Please submit any speaker and presentation ideas you have for the summit and hope to see you there!

Additionally, we are proud to celebrate the participation of over 120 attendees in the Global OD Competency Framework Learning Series that began in March, one of our annual flagship programs. Moreover, we have a fantastic lineup of webinar speakers planned for the rest of the year. The Professional Development Committee(s) in collaboration with the Board, is beginning work on a new workshop series for external OD consultants, with preliminary focus groups already underway. We are proud of and excited for the great educational and networking programs to come this year!

In closing, we extend our sincere gratitude to you, our esteemed members, for your support and dedication to the advancement of organization development and the OD Network. You can always reach out to odnetwork@odnetwork.org should you have any questions, comments, or feedback for us. We welcome your voice, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

March 5: The Human-Centered Organization: OD's Role in Bringing Radical Humanity to the Workplace

How do you expect an international group of business leaders and thinkers might respond when asked: “What are organizations centered around?” One group said: Leaders. Operations. Profit. Customers. Managers. Money. Notably missing from the list were purpose, human well-being, learning, and growth.

Many of today's organizations still replicate the Taylorist model, which believes employees are tools to be used, not human beings with ideas, energy, needs, or rights. What would our organizations look like if we treated people as unique and valuable? If we conceived of people as our most valuable source of organizational energy and contribution rather than a cost to be managed? If we acted as if every role and every person within the organization were equally worthy of dignity, appreciation, and care regardless of differences in level, education, national origin, or race?

The field of OD is grounded in humanistic values. Many of us strive to help our clients become more just, democratic, and collaborative. In this session, we explore what organizations would look like if we truly centered our businesses around human dignity, learning, and well-being. We learn from other organizations that have centered humans in unique ways and consider the impacts of human centering on practices such as appraising performance, hiring, onboarding, and managing. We’ll imagine what practices might look like in our client organizations if we chose a more human-centered approach. Participants will leave with new ideas and inspiration for OD’s role in developing vibrant, energized, human-centered organizations.

November 14: Spotlight on Action Learning

Action Learning is a powerful, optimistic, and creative process for leadership development and problem-solving in small groups. It’s applied to charge collective abilities, innovation, and inclusivity in learning organizations and communities.
In a way it proposes anti-management sentiments, and it is built on the premises that organizational change becomes possible through social listening and groundswell action. During the webinar we will explore what is (and what not), and how
to introduce it in your organization (and how not).

October 11: Practicing Dialogic OD in the Day-to-Day Life of Organizations

After working as scientists and engineers, Joan Goppelt and Keith Ray began their OD consulting careers as internals working for the Dept of Navy. They started out using traditional diagnostic methods and approaches and realized their lived experience was
uncovering other ways of having impact in an organizational setting. They found other practitioners and authors with similar experiences in the emerging arena of Dialogic OD.

In this session, Joan and Keith will share insights from their Dialogic Process Consultation OD practice:

What an organization is such that it changes

Approaches to being catalysts for change in day-to-day interactions

Importance of taking complexity seriously

How theories and experience can inform mindful OD practice

Learning Objectives:

Explore alternative approaches to OD which could provide opportunities to participate and lead change in insightful, meaningful, and savvy ways.

Provoke questions and connections grounded in your own experience and related to the concepts and ideas offered.

On the Passing of Robin Reid

Written by Matt Minahan

It is with sadness that I pass along news of the death of Robin Reid of San Diego, CA early in the morning of May 16th, 2023.

Robin was a visionary and an instigator in the best sense of the word. Much of what we now take for granted in the 21st century at the OD Network were initiatives that Robin imagined and got started years before anyone even imagined them.

Robin registered as the OD Network’s first web address in 1995. He worked closely with Warren Hoffman to create the OD Network’s first web page. He collaborated with Lisa Kimball, Frank Burns and The Meta Network to create the OD Network’s ODNet listservs, the main list still active almost 30 years later.

Robin served on the Board of Directors of the OD Network in the late 1990s. It was a turbulent time for the Network. The Board was coming to grips with racism in the country, the organization, and itself, wrestling with whether a white Executive Director and board could truly lead the organization’s fight against racism. During the debates, Robin was elected acting chair, and made a memorable and cathartic, healing speech at the OD Network’s 1999 conference, defending the organization and its actions, speaking passionately about his deep love for the organization and the field.

After his term on the board, Robin took up the role of unofficial photographer for OD Network conferences for most of the 2000s. It was his idea to project unposed pictures of conference attendees and events before and after plenary sessions, catching presenters and others in the act of being themselves.

That led to Robin’s decades-long avocation in photography. In his later years, he received awards for some of his natural photography and was an instructor for advanced Photoshop students.

Much of Robin’s consulting work was focused on improving the life and work of public servants. He had a long-time contract with the city of San Diego, which was a pioneer in bringing OD into municipal government. He particularly loved working with the police and fire departments. He had early connections with John Jones, one of the publishers of the Pfieffer and Jones Annual Handbook of Structured Experiences for Human Relations Training, published from 1972 into the early 90s, an early bible for OD consultants and experiential trainers.

It would be hard to count the number of OD people Robin mentored. He was famous for his breakfast and lunch meetings with aspiring OD consultants at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, not far from his home. He was generous with this time and advice, and always willing to share his thick rolodex full of contacts.

Personally, I had the great good fortune of working with Robin and Warren Hoffman in the early years of the OD Network’s leap into electronic life in the 1990s. We worked on the website, the listservs, and two pioneering online conferences called Collaborate ’98 and ’99, long before we knew anything about Zoom.

Robin was thoughtful, generous, and funny. Our first encounter was in a text-based online forum we used for several months to generate ideas for the OD Network. It wasn’t until he met me at the San Diego airport that I realized that Robin was a “he.” He laughed his hearty laugh when he saw my face, seeing his face for the first time. He laughed at that every time we saw each other at OD Network conferences and in my work travels there.

Robin was born in Colorado Springs in 1937, graduating from Colorado College. After his tour in the military, he served as Dean of Students at Cornell College in Iowa from 1965 to 1974. He and his sister created the Robin Reid and Sue Titus Reid Experiential Learning Endowment there in 2013. He is survived by a brother, sister, and several nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Cornell College, 600 First St SW, Mount Vernon, IA 52314 in Robins name.

Arrangements for a Celebration of Robin’s Life are pending.

Upcoming Webinar

September 26: Use of Self in Changing and Leading

How we handle our ‘selves’ in the execution of our helping, high-impact roles is the critical element in our performance and outcomes! Aspects of Use of Self (UoS) have been used and taught across OD, clinical roles, teaching, and nursing for decades, yet we continue to experience many issues with leadership, change results, and organizational/societal ethics. Each person is a complex of personality factors, identities, values, skills, capabilities, biases, vulnerabilities, and emotions. We all can understand ourselves better, which provides us with improved self- and emotional management, behavioral choices, and desired impacts on others that we intend in our roles.

David Jamieson will share some results of the first global research completed on this topic, along with his years of creating and integrating the conceptual foundations of this human function and designing and teaching others how to build their pathways to their Best Selves. The conceptual elements and phases of development combined with experiential learning activities have proven valuable for many in improving who they are and how they impact their worlds.

Learning Objectives

Understand what ‘Use of Self’ is and what’s involved and related to our UoS.

Begin some thinking about an aspect of your own use of self that you wish to improve.

Learn some tips from teaching hundreds of people on their personal UoS journeys.

What drew you to the board?
What drew me to the Board of OD Network is a desire to contribute to the further development and growth of the organization in providing benefits and services needed by OD and change practitioners in today’s modern and rapidly changing business environment and society.

What is it about OD Network that speaks to you, and why does it matter?
One of the many things about OD Network that speaks to me is in the title—Network. I have learned and continue to learn a great deal from colleagues with whom I network regarding our field of scholarship and practice. I find, in this network, opportunities for collaboration and innovation, for writing and publishing, for connections to the history of the field, and a window for vision and foresight, all while working to improve our organization, our community, our member’s professional lives, and society. Through this network I have found work, learning, colleagues, and friends. ODN is a wonderful resource for networking, in addition to so many other benefits.

From the Chair — March 27, 2023

Connecting the Dots for our Collective Change Capacity

As I sit at my desk writing this message, I keep gazing out the window at a beautiful, sunny spring day! The birds are singing, bees are humming, and peony stalks are shooting out from the softening earth. There is a sense of flourishing life and new possibilities. And – I’m beginning to “connect the dots” and imagine that our Summit in June just might be an “Earthshot” moment for the OD Network.

I believe the Summit will create a unique opportunity for us to reimagine our collective capacity for impacting change and transformation – not only in our work, but also through utilizing our network - as a positive change organization. I’m becoming more and more excited about the possibilities for greater collaboration and integration!

Our Earthshot OD Track will capture our collective dreams about ways in which the purpose and scope of OD can be much greater in the future than it has been in the past – for the creation of a world of full spectrum flourishing. Concurrently, in our Human Flourishing and Adaptive Action for Sustainability Tracks, we will examine how the patterns and trends that impact our shared humanity, and our shared destinies can be better understood and leveraged to steer our world toward a path of holistic and complete well-being.

I invite you to begin “connecting the dots” for this Network. Use our upcoming Summit in June as a way to examine how we can leverage our collective change capacity to answer the “call of our times”, and reimagine what’s possible for OD and the OD Network!

What drew you to the board?
As an emerging practitioner myself, I've received a huge amount of value from the OD Network as a member and committee volunteer. This year, I'm excited to take everything I've learned over the years and give back to this incredible community.

What is it about OD Network that speaks to you, and why does it matter?
It's no secret within the OD community that the skills we value are needed in the world now more than ever, but the rest of the world doesn't know that. The OD Network is a unique opportunity to spread the ideas behind OD far and wide, and empower the next generation of scholars and practitioners to have a big impact on the world.

March 29: 2023 International ODN Summit: Earthshot OD Appreciative Inquiry Track

Today, many are saying that it’s time for OD to aim higher, and that our ultimate ‘North Star’ as a field is not just advancing the OD and change capacities for eliminating unsustainability, but enabling and empowering the actualization of a future
we call full spectrum flourishing, powered by positive institutions. Whether it's transitioning our energy and infrastructure systems; promoting sustainable water, forestry and fisheries; investing in regenerative agriculture; building walkable
cities; or designing effective economic policies that lead to flourishing…ALL of these will require a different approach to convening, stakeholder engagement, and leadership. Join us for this webinar where we will give a preview of the track
we will be leading at the upcoming 2023 International ODN Summit: Social Impact: Addressing the Challenges of Now. Learn how our summit track will entail working with organizational leaders, practitioners and students interested in engaging
in an Appreciative Inquiry summit process to empower the next great episode in OD history: Earthshot OD.

Learning Objectives

Define what is meant by a positive institution

Distinguish Earthshot OD as a unique opportunity for the call of our times

Explore how we will leverage the AI Summit methodology at the 2023 International ODN Summit to discover, dream and design an Earthshot OD community around the question: How might we create an OD community of inquiry and capacity, equal in
                size, stature

From the Chair — February 27, 2023

From the Chair — February 27, 2023

If I think back over the course of my lifetime and try to capture in a word the spirit of the times I have lived in, I might choose the word “innovation” to describe this age. From the moon landing, to the personal computer, to the smartphone, to a Dick Tracy watch on my wrist, innovation appears to be accelerating. On a less technological train of thought, the same word comes to mind as I reflect back on this era’s development in our field of Organization Development. From Kurt Lewin to Warren Bennis to Edgar Schein and now to Otto Sharmer and David Cooperrider and many more. OD is actively innovating new sociotechnical tools and skills as we apply these to crafting a world of thriving human capabilities.

Your ODN Board has been working in the spirit of innovation these past few years as well. Surviving the pandemic as an organization took some very wise leadership on the part of our leadership. Listening to your needs and hearing from you about what you hope to receive from belonging to ODN has inspired the Board to reinvent our annual conference. You have repeatedly told us how much you have loved the Social Impact Day at the conference and how much you have both learned and benefited from meeting other OD professionals.

And so it is in this spirit of innovation that we hope to evolve our annual conference into a “summit” experience. Gathering some of the luminaries in our field to lead over three days, we believe that we can achieve both a learning environment and a collaborative networking event that results in each participant actively learning new skills alongside new colleagues. In my personal experience, I have learned so much from working side by side with other OD professionals that it inspires me to think about such an innovative way to spend our annual ODN get-together.

With any innovation, we are well aware, there will always be some who say, “I liked it better the way it was before.” I wish to encourage, even admonish, us past such thinking. If nothing else, our field of OD is a social innovation no less than the tech universe. And so, in that spirit, I hope you will decide to be bold and venturesome and join me at this year’s International ODN Summit in June in North Carolina. Together we can learn, build community, and lock arm in arm to make this a better world through our craft.

On the Passing of Edgar Schein

On the Passing of Edgar Schein

Edgar and Peter Schein

With great sadness we inform you of the passing of Edgar H. Schein on January 26th, 2023.

His son Peter Schein said "Ed passed away suddenly on Thursday evening. He and I had just finished a work gig at about 5p and were chatting after and a few hours after that he passed away peacefully, no pain, no illness, no hospitalization. As he wanted it. Just a bit sudden for us…"

Gervase Bushe wrote: “Ed was a giant who helped to create the field of organization development while a professor at MIT, along with Warren Bennis, Richard Beckhard and Doug McGregor. One of the first books I read when entering the field in the mid 1970's was Bennis & Schein's Personal and Organizational Change Through Group Methods - considered an essential text for anyone training to lead T-groups. He was one of the editors of the Addison-Wesley Series on OD, which helped to define and advance the field, and was the inspiration for the BMI Series in Dialogic OD. Ed was a big supporter of my work on Dialogic OD, seeing it as a return to roots of the field, and while a tough critic, someone whose heart was in it as much as his head.”

Ed was also a gentleman, and a gentle man with people he knew and people he didn’t. At conferences and meetings, Ed was always eager to stop and speak with young practitioners, always asking what they were learning. He was a frequent keynoter at the OD Network and featured at the Academy of Management. He was a major presenter at NTL’s 75th Anniversary Jubilee in the summer of 2022. In each case, he was generous with his time and his thoughts. In a recent conversation that he initiated about a series of webinars with founders of the field, Ed was too "Humble" to mention his own name in the conversation, but of course, it is unthinkable to hold an event like that without him.

Edie Seashore and Ed Schein

One of his first books is still one of his most popular, Career Anchors: Discovering Your Real Values, first published in 1985 and now in its 4th publication. He has written dozens of books and articles, ranging from the lessons American managers can learn from Japanese management, to The Culture of Singapore's Economics Development Board (1996), to The Clinical Perspective in Fieldwork (1987), to Organizational Learning (1996).

Ed wrote frequently about his consulting experiences, including DEC Is Dead: Long Live DEC (2003) and his oft-cited story about confessing his ignorance during a process consulting engagement with the New York Times editorial board, which turned up the fact that there was no order or structure of priority to their meeting agenda, which contributed mightily to their dysfunction.

The first of the two major themes of his lifelong writing centered on Cultures on Organizations: Three Perspectives (1994) and the several books and article related to that. He was always curious and exploring the role of the consultant and the psychodynamics of the consulting relationship.

2009 Leaders of the AU/NTL Program

His most recent writing has been in the “Humble” series, but its roots are in his earliest writing, Process Consultation: Its Role in Organization Development (1969), which clearly defined the differences between expert and process consulting, a concept that is still foundational to the work of OD consultants everywhere. Those same questions are beautifully and elegantly explored in Humble Inquiry (2014), Humble Consulting (2016) Humble Leadership (2018) and the updated Humble Inquiry: The Gentle Art of Asking Instead of Telling (2021). His last two books were cowritten with his son, Peter.

Ed’s many awards include the 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award from ASTD, the Hughes Award for Career Scholarship in 2000 from the Academy of Management, 2009 Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award from the Academy of Management, the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Leadership Association, and two awards from the Organization Development Network: Members’ Choice Award for 2004 Most Influential Books, and the Network’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Edgar Henry Schein was born on March 5, 1928 in Zurich and died at the age of 94. He was a Professor of Management Emeritus at MIT Sloan School of Management, and is still listed on their website with an office, office hours, and a phone number. He was a much beloved teacher, leader, author, mentor, and friend to many of all generations in OD and social psychology. We will miss him dearly.

From the Chair — January 30, 2023

Impact = to have a strong effect or influence on something or someone…

I’m excited and honored to serve as the newly elected Co-chair of The Organizational Development Network.

During onboarding, I’ve been learning more and more about the amazingly wonderful people that form and shape the OD Network. I am encouraged by the impact we’ve made in the past, and I’m also thrilled by the potential for this Network!

The theme of our 2023 conference event – Social Impact: Addressing the Challenges of Now! speaks to the pivotal times of today. For many, it occurs that we are on a precipice in time – a place where, in order to keep moving and flourishing, we might need to reach forward and aim higher than we ever have before.

Presciently, we are envisioning our 2023 conference as a “Summit Experience”. When I think of summits, I envision peak experiences that stand out and create a new sense of awe, wonder, and insight! They typically have a lasting effect because they involve a different level of personal awareness and commitment to reach the top!

Our 2023 Summit is designed to bring people with all levels of experience together to apply Organization Development tools, processes, models, theories, and values to the real world.
We will allow time to practice and connect with each other while making an impact on our profession. Our Summit experience will be facilitated by international thought leaders who will guide and mentor participants in learning and practicing Appreciative Inquiry, Human Systems Dynamics, and Whole System Change methodologies.

What excites me most are the new capabilities and possibilities that will be generated as each participant unleashes their own power to "Address the Challenges of Now!"

Are you ready to make a new impact in and through the Organizational Development Network?
Let’s Go!

What drew you to the board?
I was drawn to the board because it had a great mix of interesting and diverse topics related to the field of organization development that were open for discussion. It also has a great community of people that are dedicated to helping others grow and organizations develop. I am excited to contribute to the board in the capacity of Marketing and Communications trustee and help to create an environment where all members can benefit. I am passionate about making a positive difference and I believe that the board can help drive value for that to happen.

What is it about OD Network that speaks to you, and why does it matter?
The Organizational Development Network speaks to me because it provides a platform for professionals in this arena and beyond to connect and share ideas, resources, and experiences. It provides a space for open dialogue around wins and challenges, which is essential for growth and learning. This matters because it helps foster a culture of collaboration and innovation, which are key ingredients for businesses to thrive sustainably.

From the Chair — December 5, 2022

From the Chair — December 5, 2022

Dear Organization Development Network Members,

It has been my honour to serve you for the past 3 years as Vice-Chair in 2019, Chair in 2020 and Co-Chair in 2022. It is time to pass on the baton and I am thrilled to be welcoming Joretha Johnson to the Co-Chair role!

I could have had no idea that I was saying yes to leading through a historic time of multiple global crises when I joined the Board. Yet, these years have represented both some of the hardest leadership challenges of my career and some of my proudest moments.Thank you to all of you who supported, coached, challenged, cheered on, advocated, advised and overall stood for the possibility of our Organization Development (OD) profession and network making bigger and better impacts on our world today.

I am proud of the continued vibrancy of the Organization Development Review (ODR) and the incredible work of Dr. Dave Jamieson and the Editorial Board over these 3 years. The contributions of the Special Issues at the height of the pandemic, such as Use of Self in OD vol 52(1), OD in Times of Disruption Vol 53 (2) and Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in OD are all essential readings. The most recent release of the Organization Development Essentials Vol 1 is a testament to the continued challenge the ODR team provides us to continually walk our talk.

I am proud to have been part of initiating and co-facilitating our first ever Diversity, Equity and Inclusion series in 2020 and of our strengthened global partnerships.

I am proud of the team that came together to launch the first ever Global Competency Framework Series in 2021 to deepen OD knowledge and engage the network from emerging practitioners to those in mastery stages of their career, as well as supporting the OD Curios to learn about our profession.

I am proud that we launched the Elevating Humanity Award, reserved for practitioners who lead large scale change movements that transform trans-organizational and geopolitical systems for the sake of raising urgent attention to humanitarian crises, presenting practical solutions, and having a widespread measurable impact and following.

I am proud of the revitalization and growth of the Organization Development Education Association and our renewed focus on advancing the future of OD education, bridging the scholarship-practice divide and collaborating across universities to create communities of learning and practice.

It is with all these in mind that I offer immense gratitude to the past and present Board trustees I have served with over these 3 years and to our amazing network management staff who keep us organized and accountable, especially our incredible administrative director, Dana Altendorf. I want to recognize those who are also completing their Board terms this year: Susan Good, William Brendal, KJ Johnson, Sarah Larson, Nazma Rosado and Laura Woodward. Thank you for your service! And a hearty welcome to incoming Board trustees, Erin Garland, Savannah Hobbs, Briana Joyner, Eva Manole, Anton Shufutinsky and Joretha Johnson.

Members, I want you to know you are in good hands. The ongoing and incoming Board members are poised to continue delivering on what you have said is most important to you. In the 2022 member survey, you told us that the programs that provided the most value in the past 12 months were: OD Review, Professional Development webinars, Annual Conference, Dialogic OD Series, and Practicing OD. You said you have seen us grow positively with more diverse offerings, maturing organization, improved resources, more diverse and inclusive membership and seeing shift from defining OD to applying OD. You have asked us to look for more ways to connect, more robust webinars, more ways to engage members with more senior expertise and make ways to share work experiences and learnings. Your 2023 Board will build on our strengths, integrate these identified needs and keep supporting us all.

I am looking forward to the future of ODN and to continuing to volunteer on committees as I cheer our Board leadership on…
